WASHINGTON- The Senate Ethics Committee on Tuesday "severly admonished" Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli of New Jersey for accepting gifts from a campaign contributor and businessman that the lawmaker aided.

The allegations against Torricelli have figured prominently in the campaign of Republican Douglas Forrester, who hopes to oust the first-term lawmaker this fall.

"Your actions and failure to act led to violations of Senate rules - and related statutes - and created at least the appearance of impropriety," the committee said in three-page letter to Torricelli.

WASHINGTON — The Senate Ethics Committee on Tuesday "severely admonished" Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli of New Jersey for accepting gifts from a campaign contributor and businessman that the lawmaker aided.

Torricelli quickly accepted the committee's findings and, in a contrite statement on the Senate floor, apologized for "lapses of judgment."

"I want my colleagues in the Senate to know that I agree with the committee's conclusions, fully accept their findings and take full personal responsibility," he said.

The allegations against Torricelli have figured prominently in the campaign of Republican Douglas Forrester, who hopes to oust the first-term lawmaker this fall.

"Your actions and failure to act led to violations of Senate rules -- and related statutes -- and created at least the appearance of impropriety," the committee said in three-page letter to Torricelli.

Torricelli, 50, was told by the ethics panel that his acceptance of a television and stereo CD player from Chang after paying him less than their retail value "evidenced poor judgment (and) displayed a lack of due regard for Senate rules."

The panel also said Torricelli's acceptance as a loan from Chang of bronze statues of an eagle and a bronco buster for display in his office violated Senate rules and public disclosure requirements. It also cited gifts from Chang to Torricelli's sister, an employee and a friend in the lawmaker's home at Christmas as violating Senate rules.

"Continuation of a personal and official relationship with Mr. Chang under circumstances where you knew that he was attempting to ingratiate himself ... over a period of years when you were taking official actions of benefit to Mr. Chang evidenced poor judgment," the committee said in its unanimous findings.

The committee also ruled that Torricelli must compensate Chang for money he spent on the television and CD player, plus a pair of earrings, plus "appropriate interest."

Good God. Does the term I "take full personal responsibility" really mean anything anymore? There used to be a price associated with that concept. I hope the New Jersey voters can exact one from him in the upcoming elections.

Just ask Janet "roast younguns" Reno. If you "take full responsibility", it means you've now said the appropriate words and feel real, real bad about what happened.

Aside from that, go fish.... images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Power comes before justice. Tommy would rather let the Torch slide and maintain power, that's his brand of justice. If it had been a `pub, it would have been the boot.

These politicians really piss me off. They talk about upholding the law when it furthers their goal of absolute power, but when it comes time to really do the right thing they fall flat on their ugly faces in order to maintain power. The message should be clear to the voters. Rubis and company will slide because the `RATS fear a backlash translated into lost power in the senate and house, but a they'll fry Bush's butt if they think they can screw up the elections.

Bobby Tortoise-shelly's just a lousy liar and the GOP is ill-mannered enough to bring it up in front of God and everybody.

They just got no taste, them Republicans.
