Traficant sentenced to eight years

Judge rejects claim that expulsion is punishment enough
Former U.S. Rep. James Traficant Jr.'s antics in the courtroom pushed a U.S. District Court judge Tuesday to sentence him to eight years in prison on bribery and corruption charges -- more than prosecutors had requested.

CLEVELAND, July 30 — A federal judge sentenced former Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. to eight years in prison Tuesday for accepting bribes and taking kickbacks. Earlier in the day, the maverick lawmaker argued that he should not be sanctioned because he has already been punished by expulsion from the House.

I've been persuaded by the opinion that Traficant was targeted for his having broken party ranks in speaking out against Clinton during the impeachment and for the Chinese donations to Clinton and the 'Rats.

His conviction in court and expulsion from Congress, as well as Toricelli's impending vindication, are as much a sham of justice as any Stalinist show trial.

I spoze. But nothing changes the fact that Traficant broke the law.

Maybe. If the prosecutors threatened witnesses that's a bad deal no matter how you slice it. They just announced that Torrecelli's punishment is a severe admonishment in the form of a letter. Good thing Torrecelli voted party line.

I have not been following the news too closely as of late but did manage to catch Traficant on tv recently. The only comment I have about him is what the HELL is up with his hair? It looks like a baby mink curled up and fell asleep on his head. Yikes images/icons/shocked.gif images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/shocked.gif

Raven, that's part of his trademark in his deliberate flamboyance.

Yeah, he broke the law. He was prosecuted for it only because he ticked off the Powers That Be in the previous Administration.

He didn't do anything that a bunch of the others haven't done and are doing. However, he was not at all subtle about his crookedness, which most of the others are.
