I have been trying to create a personal family website for quite some time now, and I guess I just can't seem to figure everything out. I am on AOL and have tried numerous times to use their free website creation program, but can't make it work right.

Does anyone know how I can create a FREE personal family website? Or do I have to "pay" for space? Is there some kind of tutorial site, program, software that can help a layperson to create their own website? I have learned a little about html from my daughter, but this is all so confusing to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Angelfire (http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/) and Tripod (http://www.tripod.lycos.com/), owned by Lycos, and Geocities (http://geocities.yahoo.com/) owned by Yahoo!, are among the many companies that provide free web space for personal pages.

Here's a place to do some research on free website hosts.

Your Guide to Free Web Hosting (http://www.clickherefree.com/)

They're free because in most cases there is advertizing on every page. The drawback for the Christian is that the ads might be contrary to Christian sensibilities. The page owner has no control over ad content. However, many of the free-site hosts offer basic packages (some under $10/month) that offer more hard-drive space, higher data-transfer limits, tech support and no ads.

A number of our folks have their own sites, and should be able to suggest good hosts. Westbrook has a family site without ads. Check with him to see who hosts it.

I have no experience whatever with this. I neither have nor want a web site.

Another thing, check to see if your ISP gives you a lil bit of webspace.

Mine does, thats why I have my lil bitty website.

AOHell is her ISP, I gather. From what I can find, its site-building tools are not very useful for more than the most basic pages, and one can't do a lot with their templates.

There are quite a few web page creation programs out there. This one looks useful (but costs $28 to register it):

Cool Page: Web Page Creation Software (http://www.coolpage.com/cpg.html)

Arachnophilia (http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/) is a well-known freeware program that does a good job. It does require having Sun Java 1.4 or higher on the box, but that's also free.

Arachnophilia is included in the listings on this page:

Free HTML Editors, Web Editors, and WYSIWYG Web Editors and Site Builders (http://www.thefreecountry.com/webmaster/htmleditors.shtml)

I appreciate all suggestions!

I think I may need more intensive help, though, ROFL. I think I must be too computer illiterate to figure this out, LOL.

I have tried to make a webiste with the AOL offered program, but I can't figure out how to place the items on the page without it looking funny. I know some of the html tags, but when I use them they don't present on the preview page the way they do on the work space.

I think I might need to take a course first. Are their online courses offered in desigining and creating websites? It's all so confusing.

I wanted to have a family website for a while, and then if I could make it work, I wanted to try to see if I could sell a program that I have designed for children (it's a Bible study for girls and one for boys).

Ahhh, I'll just keep trying.

Almost On Line sucks. Tripod and all those that have been said are good. I used tripod for my first site and it was very easy.

Unfortunately Tripod et al have been given a bad reputation by some of the godawul pages that can be found there, looking like Picasso had a nightmare and converted it to HTML. There are a lot of excellent, well-crafted sites at all of them

ROLF -- I didn't even read that when I wrote it, what a hoot!

I gots the family, just not the website, LOL. It's all so confusing. I have made several attempts, but no progress. My AOL website looks a little like a Picasso after a rainstorm. I did a template of how I wanted it to look on a little draw program, but I can't for the life of me get a real website to look anywhere near the template.

The family, however, is just great! LOL
