NEW YORK -- Microsoft issued an interim security update Friday to protect users of its nearly ubiquitous Internet Explorer browsers from a new technique for spreading viruses.

The update does not entirely fix the flaw that makes the spread possible, but it changes settings in Windows operating systems to disable hackers' ability to deliver malicious code with it.

I don't use IE, but it's on my machine--am I suspect? Should I dump IE?

I don't think you can dump IE. Do the update anyway.

This is something I know a little about.

Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer on your computer are basically the same program using slightly different "skins". If you try to ditch IE from your machine (which is technically possible) you will no longer be able to view your own files on your machine or do much of anything else for that matter, UNLESS you are willing to install a third party file browser.

Not recommended and not worth the hassle.

The solution is to download and use a third party web browser such as Opera or (my personal favorite) Mozilla Firefox.

Crow I agree on the 3rd party browsers. I use Mozills Firefox practically all the time. I use to be an avid Opera user but after Ver 7 I didn't like the way it operated, and it seemed slower than before. I also use Thrundebird for emails and never use outlook anymore.

I'm using Opera 7.51 (reg'd version), and it's quite an improvement. IE is opened only when a site (such as Microsoft's) looks like crap in Opera due to incompetent or non-compliant coding. Being on a 28.8K POTS connection, speed is a non-issue.
