Illinois Dem: KKK Membership OK for Congress

Rep. Jan Schakowski, D-Ill., said Thursday that Ku Klux Klan members should be allowed to serve in Congress as long as they had resigned from the domestic terror group and had publicly renounced its beliefs.

Asked if she thought leading Senate Democrat Robert Byrd's past Klan membership should have disqualified him from serving in the Senate, Schakowski told nationally syndicated radio host Sean Hannity, "No, not if you've totally rejected it - my goodness."

"I think (Byrd) would agree that participation in the KKK is pretty bad," the Illinois Democrat argued, before contending that former Klan members were fit to serve in the Senate as long as they currently disavowed the organization.

Initially Schakowski tried to defend Byrd's Klan membership by falsely claiming that Republican Senators Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms had also once belonged to the KKK.

But the ploy was short circuited when Hannity told Schakowski she was wrong.

Ummm, the KKK is a "Domestic Terror Organization"? images/icons/rolleyes.gif And since when is anyone restricted from serving because of their memberships? We have card carrying Commies in office and that's far worse than the KKK.

The voters decide whether it is acceptable or not...or has this Peoples Republik of Illinois(also known as Mayor Daleyville) Socialist forgotten about them little things known as voters. images/icons/mad.gif

I dont think she meant it like that, she was saying that it shouldn't matter. If someone on my ballot was a KKK member I wouldn't be voting for them.

If that doesn't mean a person shouldn't be allowed in CONgress because of certain unpopular beliefs then what does it mean? She most certainly was saying that. Fine, everyone hates the KKK...so how about when one of her ilk pops up with the same phrase about the NRA?

Byrd sucks for more reasons than just the KKK, but it's a good one for starters because of name-recognition. images/icons/cool.gif

No, they haven't forgotten them. Even though they've been dead for years, they never forget them, especially around election time. images/icons/grin.gif

2A,
Just who does the NRA terrorize?

I don't think that anyone that was involved in the KKK, Neo-Nazis or any other hate groups should be on any American ballot but for a reason other then the obvious. If someone is stupid enough to be talked into something like this they don't need to be holding office. If they were not talked into it but truly believe in it they don't need to be holding office either.

Why, haven't you heard? It's an organization composed of millions of white trailer-trash who spend all their money on beer abnd guns and want to overthrow the government while contributing millions to the Gun Lobby from their posh Country Clubs and seeking to dominate the world via Big Business.

The Soccer Moms and the Limousine Liberals and the Hollywood Elite are more scared of them than probably any other force on earth...as well they should be.

My point exactly! No correlation!

Of course there's a correlation: ANY organization can be branded. The sheep will believe it, sooner or later. In this instance she picked a deservedly unpopular organization, but next? Maybe not.

My point remains you have a right to run for office if you're a member of NAMBLA, for Pete Sake. You have a right to hold office. It's up to the voters, not some politician to say one should or shouldn't be allowed. Her comments are arrogant, presumptive and blazingly, stupidly Liberal.
