View Full Version : Democrats Fear Losing Majority in Senate

Democrats fear that they may lose control of the Senate as polls show that at least four of their incumbents are in danger of defeat.
In recent weeks, former St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman has for the first time moved ahead of liberal Sen. Paul Wellstone, Minnesota Democrat, by six points, according to an MSNBC poll by John Zogby. And Republican businessman Doug Forrester was running four points ahead of Sen. Robert G. Torricelli, New Jersey Democrat. Mr. Torricelli has been "severely admonished" by the Senate for taking money and gifts from a one-time lobbyist friend who sought favors from him.
Two other Democrats, Sens. Jean Carnahan of Missouri and Tim Johnson of South Dakota, are in dead heats in races that have Democratic campaign officials biting their fingernails and Republican strategists exuding new confidence of taking over the Senate. The Democrats control the chamber by one seat. They hold 50 seats, with the Republicans holding 49 seats and one seat being held by a Democrat-leaning independent. A Republican takeover of the Senate would give President Bush's agenda and 49 long-stalled judicial nominees a new lease on life in 2003.
"I think everybody is nervous. We only hold the Senate by one vote," said Tovah Ravitz-Meehan, spokeswoman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
"The Democrats are nervous with good reason," Mr. Zogby said. "Under normal circumstances, losing one seat is not devastating, but this year losing one net seat is of seismic proportions."
Mr. Torricelli's sharp decline in the polls was seen as the most pivotal development in the fight for control of the Senate. He was considered a shoo-in for re-election to a second term — he had a 14-point lead over Mr. Forrester — before last month's sharp rebuke by the Senate ethics committee.
"Torricelli looks like toast," Mr. Zogby said.......

Its doesn't get any better than that.
They can have jumpin jim jeffords(treason-boy) and whoever else wants to jump ship, we'll still kick their sorry ass.
And its good for those nominations too.
Just think what the Supreme Court would look like without Stevens or Ginsburg!
We could change the social fabric again.

This scares me. With the legislative, Judicial and Executive bodies all under control of either party, the citizen would lose his representation. It would be a rubber stamp OK for the President. I believe that checks and balances are necessary through out Banks, Businesses and all Government Agencies. They still belong to the voter and tax payer who would lose all rights for 4 years.

I really hope that the Republicans retake the Senate. That will shut up ol' Dasshole for a change. images/icons/grin.gif

John you are incorrect. Read the entire article at the bottom where it says the minority party can still stop legislation. Daschle is a terrible leader.

Right now the House and Senate need a plumber to snake the bilgewater.
Conjestion: You flush and flush and it gets crap nowhere.
Pure politics: Bush says one thing. Daschle gives him the finger. Pretty predictable.
You can't go anywhere. Especially forward.
We've been so far 'checked', that we've lost the game...checkmate.
Equal and opposite pressure gives you a whole lotta nothing.
BJ68, you're worried? I ain't.
Just read any current dissent from the Supreme court and you'll see how stupid those 'checks' have grown.

Sending Wellstone back to his job as a grade school teacher would be a blessing for everyone but the school children and their parents.

You sure got that right, Warlady! I've never seen a more vindictive man than he.
When Lott recently asked who is the enemy here Saddam or Bush?, what he should have said is who is the enemy here, Saddam or Daschle? That would have made me a happy woman and showed me that Lott might be growing a pair.

John,
Did you miss something? Let me help you out.....
From the article: "The minority party can easily obstruct the designs of the majority. Sixty votes is the margin for everything now," Mr. Wittmann said.
And BTW, Senators are elected for 6 years, not four!

"Daschle is a terrible leader."
He's a leader? When did this happen? I just thought he was a heckler on the sidelines, the way he kept waving his finger at Bush and all. images/icons/grin.gif
If he's a leader I wish he would start leading.

The DemonRATs did not gain "control" of the Senate legitimately in the first place. Jumping Jim Jeffords screwed the Vermont voters who elected a Republican, screwed the GOP by giving the sleazeball RATs the opportunity to show how much respect they have for agreements that they sign, and screwed the country by putting a partisan asshole like Tommy "Tantrum" Daschle at the helm of the Senate.
Pardon me while I wipe away this torrent of hot, bitter tears for the possibility that Terrible Tommy and the RATs will be relegated to minority status.
If there is one thing fervently to be hoped for, it is that the voters of SDak will throw that arrogant, obstructionist prick out in the street when his time is up.

That's okay John. I figured you must not have. Remember the Dems had total control of both branches Executive and Legislative for damn near 50 years with only a few exceptions and they turned us into a socialist country.

Rest assured that there will be a cold icy day in hell before I will want or need your help. People who think they know it all are normally losers because their EGO's get in the way. BTW I know how often elections are held as well as the length terms.
?????Are all the Senators and the President elected and take office on the same day????

Back to the topic.
I am very concerned about the senate election here in Colorado. What seemed like a sure thing with Allard being re-elected, looks like it is going down to the wire. The Strickland camp has done everything possible to make Allard look like a pimp for big business, not that Strickland has clean hands either.
I really have a bad feeling that Strickland will edge out Allard, and that would not be good for Colorado or the country. There are enough undecided votes, about 16%, to sway the election in Allard's favor, but I just don't know about this election.

Allard will have to run a better campaign.

tac,
I don't know how close the race is because you didn't give the actual numbers. Those undecided could go either way but hopefully the 16% will swing to the right and we won't lose that seat!

With the Undecideds' getting 16%, the Total Numbers are somewhere in the ballpark of Allard 42%, Strickland 42%. Pretty close stuff.

John, feel the need to flame the board, huh? Okay let's play.

People who think they know it all are normally losers because their EGO's get in the way.
So, you're saying you are loser with a big ego? You really should think more of yourself than that!
BTW I know how often elections are held as well as the length terms.
I somehow doubt that which is why you needed corrected.
