Where would we find rules/regulations/restrictions on the magazine capacity of a hunting rifle? ie rifle has capacity for six bullets, is this okay to use? Thought we saw a law mentioning a restriction to only five. We have looked on the ATF site, our state police site, the site WarLady has listed and the NRA site. Maybe there is no such restriction.

Can anyone help?

In a nutshell, just because your handgun or rifle came with a five or ten-shot magazine when you bought it, doesn't mean that you have to use it. Depending upon what kind of weapon you have, you can use a 30-round magazine if you want to. You can even go beyond magazines and use 75-round drums if your particular weapon can handle them. The Brady Law states that after a certain date, the manufacture of magazines that exceed ten rounds is illegal. However, you may still purchase the old high-capacity magazines until supplies are exhausted. They are not illegal to own.

Ah, but ATF rules say that putting a mag with capacity over 10 rnds in any post-ban firearm produced with a lower cap mag is illegal. A federal offense. Obviously they have to catch you which is going to be tough to do BUT I do make certain I don't carry with a hi-cap in a newer pistol. Should I have to actually use it I don't have to worry about ditching the mag. Course, since I long since went to 1911s and Desert Eagles I don't really have to worry about it.

If you are asking for hunting purposes your states Fish and Game department would be the place to start. In KY Shotguns must be plugged; but rifles,as long as they are semi-auto, can have any size magazine.

Thanks for your help, guys. Hubby found a shooting range only 1 hour from our home. Beautiful, hilly location, nice benches...freezing cold. Probably like Valley Forge, said he. He had a great time and was able to take the rifles and use all six shots...called the state police for info. We were leery of contacting them before, you know how public servants can be...

yea..its all up to the game and fish at State level. In Alaska, I was shocked to find out that I can hunt with a high cap mag.

You hunt? Show me any game other than waterfowl where a high capacity firearm is useful. Deer? One shot is all you usually get. Besides, it takes you at least 1 second to resettle after the first shot. Any herd that hasn't high-tailed it to cover a second after your first shot is not worth eating. Matter of fact, these deer are made of Styrofoam or papier-mache!

Full auto? Unless you go into the field with a squad automatic weapon complete with tripod and T&E mechanism, you cannot deliever an accurate cone.
