It's extremely comforting for me to know gun owners in America will instinctively band together to thwart nonsense like the S&W deal with the Feds. I sure hope all the other gun makers have taken a long hard look at S&W's fate. Wasn't S&W bought by a British company? They really need to stay out of the industry. They have zero respect or understanding for the need of free people to own weapons.

Yea..S&W was bought out by the brits, (Tomkins p.l.c. of London, England).

I've yet to run into a gun store that approves of S&W's Gun locks. Many places are selling off their remaining stock as 'consignment items' and refuse to stock more.

The onerous burden imposed upon gun dealers by the convoluted and vague wording of the deal S&W made with the Clinton regime can actually be interpreted to apply to the sale of all other firearms in the store. Ergo, the remaining S&W stock sold by consignment and the refusal to stock any more in order to bypass the legalities.

From my observation, S&W stock just sits on the shelves going nowhere. What a shame. In their heyday, S&W did make some of the worlds finest revolvers.

I actually think that the Smith and Wesson deal with the government was the best thing to happen to shooters on Klintons watch. It brought the gun world closer together and showed other manufacturers that any similar deal by them would not fly with the public.

Smith & Wesson didn't get anything they didn't deserve and it should be a lesson that your voice does make a difference.

Thanks for posting this. Made my day.

Some thoughts:

"But a year later, the deal is all but dead——and the nation’’s largest handgun maker faces real questions about its survival."
maybe they should have thought of the reaction before trying to sell us out, frickin' limey's

"The gun lobby played a key role in electing George W. Bush, and its leaders expect him to oppose more restrictions. The gunmakers, meanwhile, are hoping Bush will do what he did in Texas: sign a law blocking any city from suing the industry. The gun war remains hard fought,
but the momentum has shifted."
Republicans and demonrats would both do well to remember this fact.

"His British parent company, Tomkins PLC, wanted to get Smith out of the courts so it could sell the company."
in other words, the Brits didn't give a care for its product or its customers, just who they could sell off to.

"Cuomo and the Democrats were turned out of office, in part because gun owners felt deeply threatened."
again, a lesson well learned.

Yes, you are correct. S&W was purchased by the brits, the same jerks who gave us John Lennon and Hugh Grant.

Every gun store we frequent refuses to carry ANY S&W firearms. The liability placed on the store owners is too great.

Needless to say, we haven't purchased any new S&W firearms after April of 2000. No big deal, either. There are plenty of other products out there that are just as good, if not better than S&W. I always thought they were way overpriced anyway.

S&W was bought 13 years ago by Tomkins, a London-based holding company, which invested heavily in the gunmaker and now plans to sell it again. The only problem is despite being valued at $161 million, it is essentially a worthless piece of junk. S&W is threatened with a billion dollars in lawsuits.

Talk about a stinker. Peeeeee Yeewwwwwwww!

Rumor is that Remington is looking to buy S&W. Smith & Wesson is a name with a lot of history behind it. I would love to see something like this happen.

True, the name Smith and Wesson is "old and venerable". That means nothing, of course. There are many other fine firearms makers. Remington is yet another "old name" in the firearms business. Given the Limey owners want to sell S&W, they are going to get hammered hard on the final price (probably have to accept a firesale price). We will have vengeance there.... in their pocket books.

This entire S&W episode proves conclusively we (the gun buyers) hold a mighty weapon over an errant gun manufacturer.... our purchasing dollars. The message to all the manufacturers is.... cave in to government pressure and we'll hammer you a lot quicker than any drawn out legal action.

I guarantee you the other gun manufacturers have taken notice. They either hang together, or hang separately.
The trouble with modern US Foreign Relations is.... we utilize way too much BS and not enough napalm.

Reply Still, it's a shame.

Mr. Smith & Mr. Wesson were two geniuses at
gun innovation. They invented the first lever-action
(which Mr. Winchester later bought out). And, their
.22 and later center-fire shells paved the way for modern
guns.

It's a shame their names were drug through the
Clinton slime, thanks to the Brits.
