Yes. At least once, maybe twice.
First time:
January 1996, the first month Texas had the Conceal Handgun License. I was carrying my Para-Ordinance P14-45 with a couple magazines of .45ACP Cor-Bon JHP. I was packing my Jeep up to move, about 8PM in the parking lot of the apartment complex I was living in (and moving out of).
Four "young men" walked by me, stopped about ten feet away and turned around, facing me. They were checking me out, whether to rob me or waste me, I don't know.... but it was one or the other. I can tell, I've "been there" before (robbed once at gunpoint and once at knifepoint).
I pulled my .45 out of my jacket pocket and thumbed the safety off. It sounds silly now, but I said "it's your move" to the biggest one, in the middle of the group.
They didn't like the sight of my .45, at all. Had they rushed me, they would have gotten to me. However, I would have gotten at least two, maybe three of them. Anyway, they immediately turned and ran off.
I finished loading the Jeep, and drove to my new place.
I sure got the shakes afterwards, for hours after that. During the entire incident, though, I was supremely confident, almost arrogant. In retrospect, one of them probably would have gotten to me.
By the way, I don't "do" roller coasters, or scary movies, etc. I've had my fill of excitement from "the real thing". I love the "sedate" life.... and the humdrum daily irritations. Give me those, any day, rather than "yet another" real life experience like the one I described.
All in all, I was quite happy I didn't have to shoot anyone that night. Merely displaying a firearm (in this case) prevented "whatever" the "young men" were planning on doing.

Not quite an issue of self defense but......
I was taking a stroll in the apartment complex (college days so it was no beaut) and the deputy/security guard was crouching behind a dumpster, revolver drawn. I thought he was after a rabid animal so I offered my assistance after he motioned me over. He was scanning over a brushy/tree infested vacant lot an I didn't know any better. Much to my surprise he told me it was poachers he was after. A few cars had been hit and he needed my help. I went and called for backup (he had no radio on him) and grabbed my .45, also a Para-Ord P14 . I maintained cover while he went and flushed one BG out in cuffs. I was thrown an old Ithaca 12 gauge pump he had confiscated from his prisoner.
Now I was guard to BG#1 as deputy went back into the bush.
While the deputy was bush beating, the other came out and took up residence in the apartment complex. I held my fire as I wasn't in jeopardy but kept the Ithaca trained on BG#2 until he entered the complex.
By that time, the PD had arrived and were giving me AND the deputy a hard time. Luckily I had stashed my pistol in my truck as I had a much better weapon. The police couldn't enter the complex as they didn't have pursuit and the deputy was out of his jurisdiction (BFD). I went back, found illegal game the BG's had shot (Federal offense to kill a Mockingbird!) and suggested the Game Warden who HAS the right to search property! Bad move on my part......More grief from those I should trust to "protect and serve". They asked for the shotgun but before I handed it over, I promptly unloaded it (carefully with the action open at all times.......I'm a gun safety nut). This really pissed the police off....I told them it was old, G-d only knows if the thing is safe. I at least can make it unloaded.
Mind you, this was back in the days of no carry. I now have the right.

Illegal.
As in no provision. It was during "Grannie Annie"'s tenure as gov. And it was shortly after Georges Hernard shot up the Luby's in Killeen. That incident is most responsible for creation of the Texas concealed carry effort.
During that time, I felt much better to be tried by twelve than carried by six.

I was carrying legally, during my incident described above. I've been essentially armed ever since.

Sonarman, did you report the incident to the police?
The police tend to designate whoever calls them first
in this sort of incident the victim, and the other party the
aggressor; and they don't change their minds easily later
on. If those four had reported that "Some lunatic pulled a
gun on us, for no reason" and given your license plate
number....
