So, what's your favorite board game?
I really like Settlers of Catan, though Risk is hard to beat....

Absolutely, hands-down RISK -- and the Lord of the Rings RISK is my favorite, at the moment. I have only lost once (and I was having a bad hair-day, LOL).

SouthernReBelle,
I've never heard of that game .... is it new? I don't think I have ever seen it at any of the toy stores, or Wal-Mart. I am a game-freak! Although, it is hard being a game-freak in a house full of people who don't like to play games. It was hard growing up too ... my parents didn't play games either, and I'm an only child. Maybe that's why I like games so much.
To be honest, my REAL favorite game is an old one called The Dark Tower. I played it so much and so often, that I broke it. I have been searching for the electronic game piece to replace it, or another game so I could buy the whole thing. Now THAT was a cool, and fun game! Sort of felt like LOTR on a personal level, LOL.

Chess is probably my favorite board game. If you guys mean a board game where more than two people play, I'd have to say any one of the versions of Trvial Pursuit.

I've found whoever controls Australia usually wins.

That would be me! LOL, I make it a point to get Australia first ... usually count on others not paying much attention when I am first placing my armies, and then four turns later, G'day Mate! LOL
I can't agree about RISK, I love it!
I used to play the game RISK a lot in my youth, never won LOL
you now can get it as a computer game, thanks for the heads up on the strategic ideas /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
I wont get tired of it anymore than i would D&D, or plain ole card games like poker et al.

Aww Rink, that's not REAL RISK, LOL. There's just something about the feel of the armies, of placing them strategically then changing your mind before you take your hand off the piece, watching your opponents eyes to see if you can gleen any hints into their strategy .... awwww man, I want to play a game of RISK bad!! LOL
< slap, slap > Snap out of it Hms, you have school to teach, LOL

Same here. Holding Australia gains two extra armies per turn, for the "expense" of only having to guard one entryway. Not only that, but if you hold Australia from Asia, you also deny Asia to anyone else (until you gain the strength to take it. I always tried to take America second, for five armies per turn, guarding three entry points.
That's board games, of course. Now computer games..... Mechwarrior is tops.

Well, we had a lot of board games when I was growing up, including old standbys like Risk, Monopoly etc. We also had some other Parker Bros. games that were less known and did not last long like Masterpiece, Happieness (a really original game) and a British game that I got back when I was 9, called London Cabbie. That was one of the more original board games as it did not use dice.
However, my Dad taught me chess at age 6 and I have played that more than any other board game. Although, with all of this talk about Risk, I am almost getting an itch to play it. Although it has probably been 25 years since I have, so I am even forgetting some of the rules!
As for PC games, I have played a lot of those going back to the 80's. My favorite ones would probably be Summoner, a really awesome D&D cloned game that really uses real strategy and has maybe the best storyline I have ever seen in a PC game. Another one is Phantasmagoria. The original one has a storyline about about ghosts, a gothic mansion, murder, gore, mayhem and madness. It also was quite revolutionary as it was the first commercially sucessful PC game (circa 1995) to use real live actors as opposed to animated characters. The second installment of it was pretty good as well.
If any of you ever played the old Infocom text-based games like Zork etc., I would recommend some of those as well. One called Leather Goddesses of Phobos is maybe the funniest game I have ever come across.

Chess is always a good one. Over the years I've collected quite a few chess boards and pieces. I didn't really mean to start a collection and I doubt they are worth much. I just like the different themes and pieces. I have an Exalibur electronic borad that I keep at work. I play co-workers and the computer. While I love to play I rarely ever beat the computer.:computer2 My son has recently become a chess player. He took a course this summer to improve his game and now I have to really struggle to beat him. Also, thanks to him, we now have the Marvel Comic book characters chess set. I think we'll be getting the Simpson Chess set shortly. I have had my eye on a Civil War chess set that goes for around $200 on Ebay. Perhaps I'll get it with this years bonus. The problem I have with Chess is that I loose focus once my plan(s) of attack are laid low. I begin to panic. I think my son is figuring that out. I think I'll have to find a beginner for me to beat up on.:D
As for board games I like games that don't take all day. I love Monopoly but the board game takes way too long. I'd rather play it on the computer or a game system. The banking and property transactions go so much quicker. I also like Parcheesi. My favorite game is probably Clue. I love that game, we have the board game, video game, computer game and the anniversary board game. It's easy to understand. Lastly, I used to enjoy playing Pit. I would always annoy the other players by obtaning one of every commodity and then just refusing to trade anything. I either cornered the market or made sure no one else would.:D

Does anyone remember Mousetrap? These little plastic mice that you worked into a cage. I think they still have it for sale. Another one was Operation. You use the tweezers to remove items from the "patient" without touching the sides or his nose would light up and beep? Loved those games as a kid.
Trivial Pursuit drives me insane but I still play it. In my last house move I misplaced it. It was purely by accident of course - since I had lost the last two rounds of it in a match against a group of friends. :D
