 Since nobody's responding to my other thread, let me try this. A few months ago, somebody showed me how to do a "snapshot" of my computer, resetting adjustments to the way they were a few days ago. Unfortunately, I lost the instructions. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, & how to do this? I'm still unable to click links that open new browsers, without freezing my internet screen & having to log out. I thought if I tried this, it might correct the problem.

:flame: Okay, a little word of advice. Don't bother calling Compaq® for tech support. After going through one of those menus, including a voice system that didn't understand half of what I said, I finally got through to a human with a Pakistani accent, who took down my address, phone number, & email, which I had to S-P-E-L-L for him, & then I had to give him my serial & ID numbers from my computer. THEN, he asked how long I owned my computer, & when he learned it was over a year, he told me he wouldn't be able to help me with anything.

Windows XP and Me have "System Restore". In XP, assuming that System Restore is turned on:

1. Go to Start > Help and Support
2. Click on "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore"
3. The default setting is "Restore my computer to an earlier time". Click Next.
4. Follow the prompts.

In Me, again assuming that it's turned on:

Roll back the clock with System Restore (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsME/using/computerhealth/articles/systemrestore.asp)

:cavalry: Okay, no thanx to Compaq®, I found out how to do the "system restore", & I can, at least for now, use links that open new browsers. That includes the advanced smilies. Without that feature, I can't use smilies like the little guy riding the horse. Let's hope that this, as well as the McAfee® AntiSpyware program, has returned everything to normal.

:moo: Oh, I just noticed that Doc had told me what I figured out. Thanx for the info, Doc. You were probably posting it, just as I was figuring it out. Oh well, your effort wasn't wasted, since others might eventually need to know this.

It's always good to have such info on hand. Looks like you lucked out. :thumb:

BTW, if you restored to a point prior to the installation of a program that writes to the registry, you'll probably have to reinstall it.

Re Compaq, the problem with prebuilt machines is the lamentable (and often expensive) customer "service". Suggestion: buy all the goodies and build your own. That way you know what's in there, and only the programs that you want are installed, instead of "bundled" software that's largely useless.

And there is a great feeling of satisfaction when you fire it up, load the OS, and run the machine.
