Used laptop?

I had a good offer for a used laptop since mine is a bit slow. What I bought is a Dell Lattitude C610. Its loaded with DVD, 1 Gig of RAM, 16 MB of video and a 40 Gig HD. The processor is a 1 GHz PIII. It was refurbished and since the HD is larger than catalogued (30 GB original, AFAIK).

My computer saavy friends think its a bit under in the processor department but with the full memory, I think it should be fine with Win2k. What sold me was the display, sufficient for light engineering work and plenty of processor power for finite element work. What I like is I can used my current battery to double the run time as it has two bays for batteries :). I also now have TWO chargers.

It should be here by the weekend.

Unless you plan to do massive number-crunching or graphics-intensive work, the CPU is ample. And it WILL do those things, albeit slower than the latest 3+GHz chips. So are you in a big hurry? If not, then it will do you just fine.

With my work, memory is the limiting factor. I am running 256 MB with a 500 MHz processor. Going to a 1 GHz and 1GB is very significant.

UPDATE:

Got it up and running after reinstalling 2k to correct the partition problem using NTFS as the file system. It rocks.
