Call me stupid, but what's a blog/blogger?
I have seen several references to blogs and bloggers, but being the computer illiterate that I am I haven't the foggiest idea what these are. Are they individuals who own internet magazines or something?
Please forgive my ignorance. I appreciate y'all's help ... I'm not always this "outta touch" LOL. Actually, I think I'm doing pretty well for a stay at home mom, LOL!
Thanks again!
Many Blessings,
Hms

Blog is a shortened verion of "weblog", a running commentary or "log" on the "web" by the individual(s) in charge of the blog. It's sort of a one-person op-ed site. And, as See-BS discovered, bloggers have the tenacity of bulldogs.

DoctorDoom,
Thank you! Mind if I ask a few more questions?
This weblog, is it part of their personal website? Is it a program you have to buy to do it? How do people know you have written one so they can read it? I guess I don't understand the mechanics of it -- does it take special software to do? Does the mainstream media monitor it, or the government?
Boy, I must REALLY be behind the times .... wish my Daddy was here :( He understood the computer so well and knew all the new technical things, sigh. I hate not knowing what I'm talking about, or knowing about current subject matter!
Just paint me perplexed, LOL.

Some folks do their blogs on the own personal website, others use of the many blog sites to do theirs. I use www.blogger.com (http://www.blogger.com) to do mine, when I can remember to update it. I did a quick google search for political blogs and it brought up 1.6 million different sites. I typed in Home Schooling BLogs and it pulled up 23 thousand different sites. Lots and Lots of blogs out there, Most are boring personal stuff. If you would like a look at mine (I Warn you it is not political in nature, its personal stuff) you can find it at http://hocutt.blogspot.com/
Funny enough I just started one today at that site lol http://katesplanet.blogspot.com/

Did you have to pay for your "blog space"? I'm really impressed ... didn't know this kind of thing was out there. I'm not quite sure I'm clear on the purpose of blogs, but it seems kind of like a public "personal" diary of sorts. I think that's neat! Maybe one day when I get more computer proficient I can find a way to make one.
Thanks for sharing with me, Unk. I really appreciate it. I tell you I am in complete awe ... also makes me think how old I feel. Always thought I was "up" on the latest things, but alas, I'm turning into an old-fogey like my parents, LOL. Makes me miss my Dad even more.
Thanks again Unk, and
Many Blessings,
Hms

NO the blog space is free, you can get your own BLOG from either my blog or kate's. If you look at the top of either blog you can hit the button that says "Get you own Blog"

Okay, another few more stupid questions, if y'all will indulge me ...
1. I am on AOL (I know, I know, it's horrible -- but it's for several reasons, which are neither here nor there right now, so suffice it to say I'm stuck with it at the moment). They (AOL) offers something called a "journal," is that the same thing as a blog?
2. Are blogs safe, or do I need additional virus/safety precautions if I make one?
Thanks for your patience, y'all!

1) I am ex-AOL user myself. The AOL Journal is exactly the same as a blog with one major difference. ONLY AOL users can access an AOL Journal, Blogs can be accessed by anyone on the web.
2) Blogs are relatively safe, of course I would not download anything from a blog that I didnt know. The blogs themselves are really just an online diary/journal.

I played around with the AOL Journal thing last night ... figures that no one will read it, LOL. So, just one more (stupid) question, are there "main" or "popular" blog space providers like there are prominent search engines (like Google being most popular and widely used, for example)?
Thanks again,
Hms
