In an effort to jump-start my new responsibilities as Moderator of the Hobbies, Games, and Crafts Forum I would like to throw out a few topics to see if we can enjoy some mutual fun (besides politics, that is! LOL).

So for my first idea ....

What's Your Hobby???

Do you have an unusual hobby? Do you enjoy a hobby you would like to share with fellow FC'ers that you think others might be interested in? How about a link to a fun hobby?

----------------------

I am an artsy-crafter! I have enjoyed macrame, needlepoint, sewing, rug latch-hooking, and pottery. My first love is animation, and I am currently working with a FREE animation program (in hopes of going back to school when my kiddo's graduate). As of today I have created a dancing eggplant, LOL. Below you will find the link to the program.
Anim8or, free 3d animation software (http://www.anim8or.com/main/index.html)

Okay, I've started the ball rolling .... What's Your Hobby???

Pigeon and grackle eradication. I'm not even making a dent in the populations of either, but it's still a lot of fun and it's good for the environment.

Is this like hunting, or pest control? My Bubba (and little bubba) LOVES quail and dove hunting. I've gone with him once, but when I shot his shotgun I made a grapefruit sized bruise in my fore arm area. I'll stick to target shooting with my little Texas Ranger, LOL.

Pardon my ignorance, I know what a pigeon is, but what's a grackle?

A grackle is a rat with wings.

I like making computer graphics, :)Do you make the little animated thingys, or just picture type stuff? I'm learning more about graphic things with my animation software, but it's taking longer to learn ... must be my old-age. I used to be able to pick stuff up quickly. I would love to learn more about using my computer for artistic endeavors. I have lots of programs, but most don't have tutorials, so I'm having to do the trial-and-error process of learning.

Agreed. Doom has the best hobby. ;)

HS, great question. My mom was into macrame, my sister into sewing... I needed to find my niche so I picked cross stitch. dPrasse calls it needlepoint. No no, not the same thing. I can't do needlepoint, only xs because there is a pattern to follow and I enjoy the metallics, blended threads and beads. :) Here is My Album (http://homepage.mac.com/burgessbattery/PhotoAlbum2.html) if you wanna peek. There is a lot that I didn't add because I gave away as gifts.

I grew up doing many things such as soap making, leather carving, chem lab, electronic lab, model airplanes, Axis and Allies, etc. My motto was (and still is) one can never have too many projects. I'm pretty boring now with reading and xs being the top two hobbies right now. I'd love to get back into shooting and learn to make frames. Framing my Garden Fairy is going to cost me $200. So I would save a lot learning to mat and frame myself. I have a mat cutter. I'd just need to buy a miter.

Peach,
I was into lots of stuff too. Every tried candlewicking or scrolling? I did a candlewick pillow once as a wedding present for someone, was so pretty I almost kept it myself -- except the names on it wasn't mine & Bubba's, LOL.

Your album was terrific! I did enjoy cross-stitch and needlepoint, but I am so fickle. A new project catches my eye and I'm off to the next thing. Right now I have gone gung-ho for Creative Memories scrapbooking -- going to a crop party this Friday night. Have put together an album for my Sister-in-Law (best present I EVER gave -- she lost ALL her pictures in a devastating house fire just six months after her son was born, but I had ALL kinds of pics and made a memory album for her!) and for my daughter's Committment Ceremony for her 13th birthday. Am working on an album in memory of my Dad right now ... is hard to work on sometimes because the memories cause my eyes to water too much to crop right.

I'm not much of a golfer myself, but I LOVE to drive the cart, LOL! Used to go with my grandparents all the time and drive them around, very special memories of times together.
I love to bowl too, but since I broke both of my ankles, it's much harder to do and actually hit anything, LOL. I'm more of a wordsearch person myself, but I do work the crossword in the TV guide that comes with our local paper!

I have both animation shop and Fireworks MX, I can do animations in either of those. I have paint shop for still images too.I have paint shop, and have used it for somethings. It's pretty easy to manage. I had a friend put a bunch of graphics programs on my puter, that I just can't seem to figure out. I even have a morphing program, but I just can't figure out how to work it. That figures ... I'm stocked to the gills with graphics programs, and yet can't use a single one of them, LOL! Guess I'll have to do a little more leg work and find out if I actually have anything I can use.

Just last night our "new" horse that we have on-loan to see if we want him, colicked, and we were up til 2:30am walking him, pouring water down his stomach, giving him medicine and praying we didn't have to call the vet (which woulda been at LEAST $100 just to walk on our property, much less the actually vet-care bill, LOL) Now we find out he will need shoes, and his teeth "floated" (filed down to get rid of all the sharp points in the back). Such fun! LOL

HS, I'm fickle too. all my pieces are on rotation. I can't do one at a time. Maybe 5 hours before going to the next one. Yes I've done candlewicking but not scrolling. My sis in law was a Creative Memories consultant. You will love the party as they're so much fun. I have some pages here and some I left in GA at mom's. We'll have to share pics of the pages!!!

My hobby is edged weapons.Wolf,
My son collects knives -- he's got some really neat ones too. We have a local Watermelon Festival every year and there's a very interesting booth with specialty knives (hand painted, carved handles, etc.), and that is where my son has gotten most of his (with the exception of birthday & Christmas presents). The one thing I would LOVE to buy my son is the blade thing that looks like a Klingon Batleth (I know I am not spelling that right, LOL).
I don't tell many peeps about his collection --- you know the "theory" about us redneck homeschoolers, we be gearin' up for WWIII or sumthin, LOL. He takes very good care of them, and wants to get a case to put them in to hang on the wall.

Oh by the way, going to another Creative Memories party tonight (did I say that already before, I can't remember ... old-age-itis catching up with me), going to work on my Dad's book (if I can, but if not, I'm bringing pictures of my son to work on one for him or my Mother-in-law, which ever looks better).

My hobby is edged weapons.Something we have in common,WC. I collect swords and weapons used in martial arts like shurikens, throwing stars, daggers and such. Much is now gone from a collapse in my Dad's garage however so I'm lacking nowadays.

For now, my two major hobbies are my photography work and my computer gaming clan which I am very active in. If you're interested, check it out: http://www.atachq.com WARNING!! We have fun picking on each other and yes, we are perverts from time to time but nothing X rated or anything. I don't have a site dedicated to my photography but if anyone is interested in my work, I can send a shot or two.

I collect unusual pocket knives. Not rare or antique or even valuable ones, just the ones I find interesting.

I enjoy target shooting, writing, and reading.

It appears as if I'm starting a collection of unusual firearms too. Again, not rare, studied or valuable, just something that catches my eye.

Some years ago, (before the back injuries) I was into martial arts instruction as well as (believe it or not), needlepoint (helps a LOT with stress).

Mine is Astronomy, done with Telescopes and Binoculars.I have two large Telescopes at this time, but they are getting a lot of rest as we are in Winter time. The bigger one is a 25" F 5 Obsession and it is so big that I have it an trailer for storage and to transport,it is 250 pounds. The Smaller one is a 13.1" F 4.5 Coulter Odyssey.

I have taken my bigger one deep into the Mountains for those breathtaking views! Some of those trips are to large Starparties, that can number a few hundred telescopes and 650+ people for 3-4 days in one small area,in the boondocks. The Oregon Star Party and the Table Mountain Star Party are the two events I have been too.

The best moment happened when I woke up around 3:00 am to get out of the back of my truck and looked up at the sky,it was STUNNING! gorgeous sprinkling of stars and the pleasing wonder of the transparency of it all was breathtaking! It still burns in my memory, despite that it was 10 years ago. What a memory, ahhhhhh.

Met several famous people too at these parties,Richard Berry(former Editor of Astronomy),John Dobson(creater of the Dobsonian Telescope) among them. This year I plan on going to the Oregon Star Party,a 5000' elevation is where some of the best night skies are found in the west,in the middle of nowhere.

Hobbys are FUN!

Mine is Astronomy, done with Telescopes and Binoculars.I'm not into astrology, but I did enjoy star-gazing with my father when I was a child. My dad had a neat telescope, and an awesome pair of binocs (I inherited them on his passing, and now my son and I use them to star gaze). My favorite show as a child was Star Trek (still is, actually), and Dad and I used to make up stories about if we were a part of the Trek world. Great memories . . . great Dad. Thanks for making me think about that . . . I owe you one!

Hobbys are FUN!And healthy! One needs something to help them restore calm in their lives. Wish I had enough time in the day for all the things I enjoy -- drawing, macrame, sewing, crafting, design, etc. Ahhh, one day when the kids are grown and gone away . . . . then I'll be raising Bubba, LOL.

Yeah I agree that Hobbies are healthful. When I get into the Hills to Stargaze,I also do camping,so really I am away from it all for a day or two. Then too the air is clean and the place restfull.

Imagine being there waiting for the Sunset to come in a quiet setting,it is restfull and yet exciting! Then with the Orange Red sunset to view, what a nice way start to a night of observing ,hence my screename,Sunsettommy.

I'm not in an area where I can indulge in serious astronomy (not that far away from city lights), although clear summer nights provide a magnificent view of the Milky Way. One day I might invest in a relatively small scope (6-10") and equip it with a CCD. I've always had a hankering to try some simple astrophotography.

Ever used Starry Night software? I have SNE 5.0 on this box. It's a marvelous toy, although it eats up almost a gig of hard drive.

When I worked on rodeos I used to gaze at the stars and think how neat it would be to take up astronomy. I'd try and pick out Big Dipper, Orion, etc.

Anyway this is REALLY corny but I finally finished and framed it last month. Got a lot of laughs.

My hobby is quilting. Unfortunately most of my projects are made for other people so we only have 2 quilts in the house that I have made. The rest are floating around with other people, hopefully being enjoyed. I want to get into scrapbooking but can't seem to find the energy to go through all our photos. That pile scares me!!

Does people watching count? It's not at all productive, but I love to sit, for hours sometimes and just watch people. We recently bought a 28th floor vacation place and I can tell some pretty funny stories just from watching people who don't know I'm there.

I have quite a few hobbies. Anime is one of my major hobbies... most anime isn't as kid-friendly as the dummed down american versions of Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z... a majority of anime would be rated PG14 to R by american standards.

Also, in fall, spring, and summer I go gemstone mining. I have a half-decent collection of gems... not really too many precious stones, but I heve tons of semi-precious stones.

Also in the summer I love swimming, hiking, and boogie boarding.

I also enjoy arts. I love going to galleries, musems, concerts, and theatear, as well as creating my own art. I draw, paint, sew, make jewelery, and overall use whatever I can get my hands on in some sort of artistic way.

...Also, in fall, spring, and summer I go gemstone mining. I have a half-decent collection of gems... not really too many precious stones, but I heve tons of semi-precious stones...I studied Geology for a short time and gemstones are a hobby of mine also... I have a very pretty black opal - not very big but the colors in it are impressive... I also have a nice, if small, collection of fire agates... Among other stuff... Many of the stones in my collection have gone to jewelry for my wife...

My official hobby however is woodworking - Although recently I have fallen from the purer faith and have purchased a few power tools, I like to do most of the work by hand with hand planes, chisels, etc... Im a Roy Underhill wanna-be...

I am in the process of building a proper workbench... After that my wife has a list of furniture she wants...

I've always been a reader and a fair to middlin' writer. One day I'd like to finish a ficton novel I've been meaning to write, my law studies are standing in the way of that however.

I also have an acoustic guitar in the closet that hasn't been played in a while, I am looking for a reasonably inexpensive left-handed model (Yes, your suspicions are true, I am a lefty  ), but I use to be able to play right-handed, even learned a few songs (Folsom Prison Blues, Hotel California to name a couple, and of course the universal "first song" for all guitarists, Smoke on the Water, I've since forgotten them though), and have always been told by instructors that I could play a song by ear.
