U.S. needs uniform voting regulations

This year's election was free of massive problems at the polls, but U.S. election laws remain a muddle of federal, state and local rules that aren't all the same.

...
Congress needs to develop a rational, consistent set of rules for federal elections that are fair across the board.
...
There is much to be done before the next big elections in Colorado in 2006, when the governor and attorney general seats will be up. A good start would be for Congress to establish national uniform standards to guide elections fairly in all 50 states.

The Denver Post is the local liberal rag.

The Sec of State for Colorado is an idiot. Donetta Davidson claimed she didn't know that convicted felons were voting, and that this was an issue. Keep in mind that this fool has been in office since 1999 and should be aware that this type of fraud was happening. She should have since, one of the terrorists voted in the 2000 election and her office published the information.

Voting System Standards (http://www.fec.gov/pages/vssfinal/vss.html) have been published and appear to be pretty comprehensive and specific. What I hear the Post saying is that we need to hold the voters hand and make sure they go to the right place to vote. I say, if they are too stupid to go to the correct place, they shouldn't vote.

The Constitution already prescribes uniform regulations as to qualifications for federal offices, and guaranteeing sufferage to women, former slaves, and eighteen year olds. Other federal laws extend these: the Voting Rights Act and the 2002 law enabling "provisional" ballots, for example.

There is no need to intrude upon state perogatives for no reason. We have been holding elections for over two hundred years, and they have never been more open or fairer than they are today.

This whole "issue" is manufactured by far-left denizens of the fever swamps, who cannot believe they are losing.

Let 'em whine, I say! It's free entertainment . . .

What Esty said. I DO believe that photo ID should be required in all states and that the INS or whoever should check to make sure that everyone that registers to vote is a US citizen. We know that the honor system doesn't work with Democrats.

Photo ID's for ALL voters and make one uniform method of voting. A voting booth or whatever but make it so for everyone.

I could support Photo ID's being required but I dont support any more Federal intrustion into State Matters.

"Uniform election standards" is the mantra of liberals and their real target is the Electoral College. Open the barn door a little and you'll find yourself trampled by the herd.

Why? It is up to the individual states to appoint electors as they see fit. The individual state governments are not required to let us vote at all, but if they do, they must apply equal sufferage to all who choose to take part...with certain exceptions to felons, etc.

From the US Constitution:Article. II.

Section. 1.

Clause 1: The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice President, chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows

Clause 2: Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

Mind you, the above applies only to electing the President...the Senate (wrongly) and House of Representatives (rightly) are elected by the people. But, even that is a matter of STATE concern, not federal.

Where I vote we sit around tables out in the open to fill out our ballots. Makes for good fellowship. We don't believe in secrecy!

If people understood that there are no such things as "Federal" or "National" Elections, they would then understand that it's not UP to the feds to decide what the rules are.

Never was it intended that the popular vote be used as a method of determining the winner of the Presidential race.

BUT, seeing that dems have been responsible for the education of our children for the last 30+ years...the understanding will likely never come.

The people no longer realize that the power comes from the states and not the Federal Government. Most people I spoken with don't know there's a difference between local, state, and federal government ... they just lump everything together into one big entity "government." It's this same mentality which causes them to believe there is a giant money tree in the back area of the Capitol Building from which all entitlement moneies are harvested.
As long as the states do everything they can to promote and provide adequate voting procedures and equipment, there is no problem. Even if there IS a problem, it should NEVER be left up to the "Federal Government" to solve. Just look how they manage things up in DC!

one question on the photo ID thing, what if you vote via absentee ballot? How do you remedy the photo ID problem with that?
