We got our first snow of the year today and along with it our first upside-down 4x4. :D
This year I'm keeping a tally of all the 4x4s vs. non-4x4s I see in the ditch. I've got a theory that 4x4s are highly dangerous in the snow due to the fact that they have a tendency to lower some people's IQ to less than 0. Usually those from California, Washington or the west side of Oregon. It never ceases to amaze me that people can't figure out that going in the snow and stopping in the snow are two totally different concepts.
LOL hate ta tell ya but I Have a 4x4, but never use the 4x4 features unless its a total necessity.
Most people who have 4x4's have an over-reliance on the 4x4 features to get them from point A to point B in winter weather.
The key to proper safe driving is......... proper safe driving techniques, not an overreliance on fancy technology, but common sense driving.
Been driving for 25 years, had cars without those irritating 'anti-lock' brakes which I Really REALLY hate, because I learned how to drive on cars that never had em and old habits are hard ta killoff, hence my hatred for anti-lock brakes lol
But driving at lower speeds and using caution is the way to go in inclemented weather.
Last year I came home from Vancouver WA from shopping and it snowed, I used caution and kept my speeds down on a highway that allowed 60mph (I was going 40 to 45 at the most) and had idiots passin me by at breakneck speeds, that on a very slippery road.
THOSE are the dorks that get into wrecks.
PS: I've noticed oregon drivers have this insatiable need to speed like hell on their freeways with reckless abandon, its as if they're on an indianapolis 500 raceway.
I prefer the lovely winding, difficult road of Highway 14 from Vancouver to the east, 45 miles of miserable winding dangerous roads, for some reason i find it more 'relaxing' than having to fight through hassling jockeying nutcase speed-demon drivers from hell on the freeways.

Faithful, it's our second snow of the season here but it's always the same here with the mindset of people thinking, "Hey, I drive a 4x4" so they don't slow down and off the road they go. My foster brother and I used to make a ton of money during the winter growing up back home dragging people out of ditches in a Cadillac or Suburban loaded up with skis and such. $500/storm wasn't uncommon@ $50/ pull. Yes, we even pushed one back in who refused to pay!
I've been driving in snow all my life and have yet to have a problem in it.

I was fortunate in that the first time my father took me driving on real roads (as opposed to Forest Service roads), it was February with about 18" of snow on the ground, driving a 67 Dodge Power Wagon with a camper on the back. I have no fear of driving in the snow, but whole lot of respect for slick roads. Nowadays, I drive a Geo Metro sedan, front wheel drive and GOOD snow tires (no studs) and I've never had any problems.
Rink, I said it lowered SOME peoples IQ to 0. A lot of people I know drive 4xs and are great drivers in the snow. Then there's people like my wife ex-boss, who believes that snow only means the road is white instead of black.

I got most of my experience with driving in snow and ice when I refereed high school (and one college JV) basketball games in western Pennsylvania and later in northeastern Pennsylvania back in the 1950s. Going to various high schools involved driving on a lot of back roads at night through the hills and mountains of PA where snow plows couldn't keep up with all the snow.
I haven't driven in snow since we made a 4-week trip through the Northwest in 1995. It was June, but we had snow in Oregon, Montana, and Wyoming, especially at Crater Lake, where only a mile at the south end of the road was open. The rest of the road around the lake was closed due to 10-foot drifts. It didn't take me very long to remember how to drive in snow. It must be like riding a bicycle - something that you never forget.

Uh, snow? Yesterday was 86 and today was 85! For a pleasure this time of year when it’s usually too chilly to BBQ, we did precisely that…had steaks. Leave it to Southern CA to mess up the season with warm weather! How can one get "into the spirit" when one has the air conditioner on? :D

When I lived in Long Island there were tons of accidents from those who had that false sense of "4x4 security...."
And it doesn't do any good on ice. I drove on the LIE sliding all over the place even with 4x4 on. I agree the key is defensive driving....
With Ice you need Chains, even semi-trucks need chains for ice for heavens sakes, all the 4x4's in the world will do ya no good if you dont have some sort of traction device for your car for icy road conditions

Do I understand this correctly? You actually stop BBQing just because it's cold? Californian wimp. At my house, we grill year-round. Sweep the snow off and fire it up!

There is simply no excuse for not grilling due to weather conditions. Snow, rain, wind, fog, blazing heat, freezing rain, hail; I've grilled in everyone of them (the hail was kind of an interruption thing, but the meat on and it wasn't coming off 'til it was done [just barely]).

We have a 4x4, a new Firebird (its the wife's and she is Conservative so she likes her fast cars) and an Acura.
For some reason the Acura does best on the snow. I have yet to this day figured it out, but it just runs good on the snow and ice.

Oh yea! Rain snow, just put something over the grill so it don't get drowned. I mean c'mon, put on a stinken coat if you're cold and hold your hands over the grill, that'll warm em up real quick... no not on the grill you moron.... owe... moving on!
I'm come from a land up and over, Anchorage Alaska. You don't know cold till it's at least ten below... then you can start whinning.
Now of course I'm in Oregon. If you don't bake here, you'll drown. Haven't seen one snow flake all year. Freaking %$&&^*$%%@!!!!! climate shift!
Don't drive, but I ride a bike... just avoid ice on a bike. Ride the bus if that's too hard. Otherwise, on a bike you can forget about traction on ice!
Its snowin here right now :D just in time for the New Year :thumb:

We've been getting a little bit each day for the last couple of days now. It snows 1-3 inches and then most of it melts during the day. The first snow we got sent my wife for a complete loop. She looked out the window and saw a foot of snow on her van. It turned out there was only 3 inches, but she got a little confused. The cool thing is how the snow brings out the best in our neighborhood. There's an older couple (80+) who live a couple of houses down from us and me and one of my other neighbors (Doug) kind of have a race to see who gets to shovel Howard and Eva's drivewway. This week Doug was gone to spend the week with his in-laws, so a friend of his was house-sitting. Doug called him up top make sure that he got Howard's driveway shoveled, but it was too late, I had already beaten him to it.
LMAO thats so kewl bout the driveway shoveling :thumb:
