Soooo cute Suzie! I miss having a kitty around our house ... but with two dogs, a lizard, and a horse, I don't think we could handle too much more, LOL. He looks like a real sweetie-pie!

You don't want to do that faithful.... at least not if you are superstitious. ;)

There are many superstitions associated with cats, partly because the cat has lived alongside humans for many millennia. The cat was worshipped in Egypt and to kill one was considered a capital crime. When an Egyptian family's cat died, the cat was mummified and the family went into mourning. Romans, also, considered the cat sacred and introduced it into Europe. By the 17th Century, however, the cat began to be associated with witchcraft and it's luck turned from good to bad in many areas. A practice that became popular for a time was to burn cats and other animals on Shrove Tuesday (before the start of Lent), in order to protect one's home from fire and other calamities.
Superstitions centering around the black cat are some of the most well-known and popular superstitions today. It is interesting, though, because the good or bad luck they possess is dependent on where you live in the world. In Britain and Japan, having a black cat cross your path, is considered good luck, whereas if you live in the USA or several European countries, it is bad luck to have a black cat walk by.
Good luck associated with black cats include:
Possessing a black cat.
Having a black cat greet you at a door.
Having a black cat enter your home.
Meeting three black cats in succession.
Touching a black cat.
Bad luck associated with black cats include:
Meeting a black cat early in the morning.
Having a black cat turn its back on you.
Scaring or driving away a black cat from your property.
Walking under a ladder after a black cat has walked underneath it.

They're green rimmed in yellow on my screen. I'm not superstitious. Although I had a black kitten when I was a little kid and my Dad hated them at the time. He insisted that I get rid of it so my Mom took me and my kitty over to my aunts house. When we got out of the car a pack of dogs raced towards me and my kitten jumped on top of my head and shreaded my scalp. They put me in the bathtub and it turned blood red literally. I never had a cat again until 2 kittens showed up at our doorstep at the beach about ten years ago. They adopted us and we've had cats ever since. Just barn cats but they are beautiful. I'll try to get a picture of old Blue. He's gorgeous.

Cats were worshipped in Egypt and had their own Goddess, Bastet. Bastet was also the Goddess of the harvest. It made sense to have a cat goddess of the harvest because the temple cats kept mice from the graneries. That's why they were worshipped. In ancient Egypt, cats were kept only by royalty. Because only royalty had grain. A poor person in possession of a cat was presumed to be guilty of theft of grain.
In England the cat's association with witchcraft stemmed from the catly stare. It resulted in the slaughter of cats especially in the cities. Rural englishmen knew more the value of cats than their citified counterparts. Killing so many cats directly led to rat overpopulation and the explosion of bubonic plague which killed tens of thousands. Rural England was almost untouched by the plague for two reasons, one people lived far from one another and transmission was difficult and rural Englishmen kept their cats which kept the rats down.
The Great London Fire put an end to the plague by killing the rats and the sick people too. Unfortunately, the humans made the wrong connection and attributed cats to the fire. Hence the burning of cats on Shrove Tuesday.

I once found a black kitten on July 3rd. I was scared that the fireworks the next day would scare the kitten so I took it to my ex-husband and begged him to keep the kit just until after the 4th. He refused, but by begging and pleading he agreed to keep the kit just until the 5th.
I showed up on the 5th for the kit. He not only refused to give it to me, but said "You can't have Midnight and you got some nerve showing up trying to take a man's cat away."
Midnight lived with my ex until he died at the age of 22.

My daughter's kitty died about a week ago, she was so heart broken I wanted to get her another for Christmas but when we saw this one while she was "looking" I caved and let her have him early. He's very friendly our other cat ran and hid whenever anyone came in the house. This one runs to the door like a dog would. :)

The story behind our little black cat farm is a great one...
My wife was working as a bookkeeper for a auto repair shop and she 'adopted' a mama cat that was pumping out kittens as fast as the neighborhood toms could keep going. Kelly (my wife) talked teh vets office across the street into fixing Mama Cat for free which stopped Mama from breeding. Unfortunately, Mama had a couple of kittens who survived the hiway, the neighborhood dogs and the landlord. Two of her offspring bred and had four kittens. We caught the kittens and brought them home with the intent of getting them socialized enough to give away. We named them Spook, Midnight, Mystery and Satan. Satan was the evilest 4 oz. of cat ever birthed. It met it's demise the day it assaulted my wife when she was cleaning the cat box (she was wearing welding gloves, so no real harm). The cat was attached to her hand, biting, clawing and kicking for all it's evil worth. Kelly had had enough. She opened the window and flung Satan out and bounced it off the fence. Shortly thereafter, we got the two remaining males and the one female fixed. The boys are now outside cats in need of a barn and the female (Mystery) is an inside cat (de-clawed).

We had a cat we had to get rid of because it was so mean when my daughter was still small. It attacked people too. That's why I REALLY checked this one out.
Our evil kitty was a long haired tabby though.

PH in OKPatriot,
You must not of seen my other "animal" related posts, LOL. Believe me, our house is usually like a zoo ... I think there is an invisible blinking sign that is clear for all to see but my family -- DROP YOUR STRAYS, UNWANTED PETS, AND UNUSUAL ANIMALS HERE with an arrow pointed at my house. We have rescued/resuscitated or owned kitties, puppies, squirrels, baby birds, pigs, gophers, parakeets, horses, hermit crabs, broad-headed skinks, fish ... you name it, it's either been with us or lived with us, LOL. Been trying to scale back a bit, as we are doing some remodeling to the house (I got fed up with fleas, and have ripped the carpet completely out of the house -- this started Monday, and Bubba thinks I have lost my mind).
I once gave a black kitty to my dad as a gift. We named him Batman because he had a small white area on his face which gave him the appearance of wearing a mask -- also, he had six toes on each paw. He was one of the most loving cats I have ever known. He was a perfect match for my Father (now they are together in Heaven).
Suzie, I just love the way your kitty looks. Awful tempting, makes me wanna go get another cat (we lost our last cat -- a black one by the way, named Tayboo -- to kidney failure). I love cats, and our dogs got along well with him, as well as the next door neighbor kitties. Only problem, we already have too many mouths to feed (teenagers eat like horses ... and we already have one of those too! LOL) My son is bucking for a snake or another lizard, my Bubba wants a boxer bulldog, my daughter wants another cat, and I am just biding my time till the animal population decreases a bit around here so I can get my doberman.

I used to have an all white cat when I was a child, and he was deaf. So I have gone the kitty color spectrum I guess. :)

His name is Midnight. He's not the most social cat I've ever been around, but he's a killing machine. Cheap to feed, too. A 10 lb. bag of bird feed would keep him happy for a year or so.
