MILLAU, FRANCE.- The Millau Viaduct is pictured after it was inaugurated by French President Jacques Chirac on December 14, 2004 in Millau, France. Designed by English architect Lord Norman Foster, the Millau Viaduct is composed of seven slender soaring pillars and becomes the highest bridge in the world at 343 meters, creating a direct route between Paris and the Mediterranean coast. <!-- Include virtual='/includes/sitio/guardian.asp'-->

One day the Moslem rulers of France will look at it in awe, wondering how it was made
just like they did the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople/ Istanbul

Here's a site (http://bridgepros.com/projects/Millau_Viaduct/)with more info and pics. I hope they guard it well.

Ay yi yi! Ya'll can cross it; I'll pass! Just think of driving this on a dark windy night.... I'm chicken.

Didn't the French build an airport terminal that fell down??

Talk about confusing wording. The article says "the world's highest bridge," which I understand to mean at a higher altitude than any other -- a bridge linking Mount Everest to K-2, for example. But it turns out they mean "the world's tallest bridge."

Didn't the French build an airport terminal that fell down??That reminds me of a woman who about fifteen years ago lost her life when her little Yugo was blown off the Mackinac Bridge in a severe windstorm.

They will guard it very well... each end will be guarded by 60 men on a 5 man, 2 hour rotating shift. Each man will be equipped with the finest in French military technology, we're talking state of the art, web-based, LCD white flags. If anyone attempts to blow up the bridge they will immediately surrender and offer the terrorists some stinky cheese, bread with a hard crust and a bottle of wine.
Vive le France!!

The site evidently exceeded its bandwidth limits. Here's a better one.

The French are arseholes extraordinaire, but credit must be given where it is due: that is one hell of an impressive feat of engineering.

Indeed.

Considering the Frenchies built it, that's actually pretty awesome. They built the Chunnel right with England so I'd cross it although my wife would be terrified.

hi, i irrationally hate an entire nation of people because their government and mine don't see eye to eye on everything.

Not me, okker. I rationally hate an entire government because its leadership is stupid, corrupt and irrationally anti-American.

Hope you recover from your condition soon.

Don't give the French too much credit: it was British engineered and designed:

Famous British architect Norman Foster was in charge of the viaduct's appearance. It has been designed to look as delicate and transparent as possible. Each of its sections spans 342m and its columns range in height from 75m to 235m over the river Tarn. It uses the minimum amount of material, which made it less costly to construct: the deck, the masts rising above the road deck and the multi-span cables are all in steel.

Didn't know that although I'm not surprised as they designed most of the chunnel too I believe
