'Judge Judy' hit with abuse suit

By Steve Brennan

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Charges of abuse on the set of the hit syndicated television show "Judge Judy" have been brought by a producer on the show, who is suing the program's executive producer, alleging that he harassed and verbally abused her.

Producer Shawn Griggs joined the show in April 1999 to work for "Judge Judy" and Big Ticket's "Judge Joe Brown" court shows. Griggs began communicating with Paramount human resources representatives about a year later concerning "abusive behavior" on executive producer Randy Douthit's part, the court papers allege.

Also named as defendants in the case filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court are Big Ticket Television, which produces the court show, and parent company Viacom Inc.

Griggs further alleges that Douthit later "intensified his focus" on her, "humiliating and demeaning" her. He spread untrue rumors about her abilities and allowed other supervisors and employees to make derogatory remarks about her, she says.

At one meeting, Douthit and his assistant, Victoria Jenest, "verbally attacked" Griggs, citing alleged problems with her work performance that included such "trivial issues as not attaching post-it notes to her paperwork. The alleged 'problems' included such inapplicable complaints as 'promptness' despite other producers and employees failure to even appear for work without as much as a warning," the court papers say.

Griggs' complaint also says that her employers failed to take her complaints about Douthit seriously and "failed to interview any witnesses which could corroborate plaintiff's version of the work environment fostered by Douthit's behavior."

A Paramount spokesman said, "We have no comment. We have not been served."

As Steve Brennan failed to report, is that Randy Douthit prevailed with a summary judgement against Griggs; that is, she had no case. She appealed twice, but the judgement was upheld. If it's a sexy accusation then reporters love to jump on the story, but if the allegations are proven to be unfounded, they develop amnesia. This is extremely irresponsible jourhnalism, if you can call it that.

Judge Judy is such an eyesore. With this lady on TV its no wonder that the public have little trust in the justice system. I shudder to think that there are people who actually imagine that this is what judges in actual courtrooms act like.

She spent 15 years on the bench in New York. Richard Cohen, columnist for the Washington Post, seriously recommended her to replace Sandra
Day O'Connor. She cuts to the chase, gets to the truth and makes decisions.
She is quite intelligent and incisive. I doubt many could go toe to toe with her. Especially if you are basing your argument in fiction.

All I have to say about her is...

I'd hit it!

If your employer requires you to attach "Post-it" notes to paperwork, and you don't do it, then said employer has every reason to complain about your work performance.

We won't go into "promptness", as I am a stickler about it.

who knows what the truth is, but it seems lately that if you don't like the way something works out...you just sue and see what happens.

Although, there are places where this does happen. I worked for a man that tried to do something quite close to this...changed the rules without telling the woman he was getting back at, so then he'd write her up for breaking the rules and got her fired. By then I'd quit and had another job, so when she filed suit through the EEOC, I was more than happy to testify. In that company too, they did nothing when she complained to HR...except tell him she did it.
