Tomorrow I begin an adventure in trying to dual enroll my son at our local community college. For the past 11 years I have faithfully and diligently worked to academically stimulate and educate my child. Now comes the day where I must rely on my foundation and release my boy into the world to pursue his future.
As a homeschooler, I am already "outside the box" in my little community, and although my Mom is very supportive, we have received little to no support from other friends and family. That being the case, and the fact that I have always been "the rock" when it comes to the issue of education, I have no one I, as a mother not an instructor, can share my concerns with, so I was hoping y'all wouldn't mind if I lean on your shoulders just a bit!
He wants to pursue the Applied Welding Technologies program. We were blessed last year by the generosity of a wonderful friend, who just happens to work in the Construction Education Department of the University of Florida. He asked the Professor for permission, and was granted, to give up his lunch hour once a week to teach a modified construction course for my son in the University Department. My son was introduced to all sorts of construction equipment, and also made several projects -- one large one, a welding project, he actually built a small trailer to pull behind our lawn mower/tractor. My friend shared with me that my son has a real knack for welding, and he agreed to write him a letter of recommendation in the off chance that it would help with the registration process for dual enrollment to the community college.
There are only three openings for homeschoolers in the Applied Welding Technologies Program. Please, if you would, pray for me and most especially my son as he begins this new chapter in his life. I have faith that I have done all I can to prepare him for this moment. But the human in me, well as a Mom, I am scared for my little boy ... er, I mean my young man.
Thanks y'all. Whew, it feels good to not be so strong all the time. Thank for letting me get that off my shoulders. I'll keep you all updated!
Many Blessings,
Hms

Arrrrgggghhh!!! Short update:
Called this morning and they will NOT allow me to go pick up the application, I must wait for it to be mailed. Then I have to mail it back (I'll be dog-gone, I'm gonna drive that thing right to their door!) and WAIT to hear from them about him taking the CPT. I won't even KNOW if he's been accepted until May. This is so frustrating ... there are only 3 openings for homeschoolers, how does one even stand a chance!:hissyfit:
Sorry for my little rant, I am discouraged this morning. I must get back on my Rock, and hold fast that His Will be done, not mine. Anyway, I'm hoping to get the application in the next week or two, so ya'll don't give up hope for me and keep sending up the prayers -- I'd rather have a nice lot built up before I begin the battle again, LOL.
Thanks y'all!

oKAY, for all those that have been praying (and anyone else who may view the thread), here's a little update on our progress.
We dropped off li'l Bubba's application last week and they said we would have to wait for the CPT packet to arrive.
It arrived last Friday morning, but much to my surprise I found out he has to have a picture ID (a state ID or driver's/learner's license) to take the test. That put us in a pickle barrel because in the state of Flori-duh, a minor NOW has to take a 4hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness Class prior to taking the learner's test.
SO, I went to the net. I found an online, Florida-state approved driving course which provides for the 4 hour D.A.T.A. AND would allow him to actually take the learner's test online at home. He passed!! Yippee!!
Big Bubba took him this past Tuesday and he now (officially) has his learner's permit (in his wallet!)
Whew! Now, I told you all that to tell you this ... li'l Bubba is going tomorrow morning to take his CPT (College Placement Test). I most humbly ask, please pray for him. I am not asking for prayer for him to pass the test, I am content with whatever God's Will be. I just want prayers for his anxiety. He feels deeply that his dad and I would be so disappointed in him if he doesn't do well -- although that couldn't be farther from the truth. We have always believed God will provide success for him if he is doint all he can and stays faithful. I think he is just so worried about letting us (mom & dad) down, that he may go into the test with a high anxiety level and then not do well because of it.
Anyway ... will let you all know what happens tomorrow afternoon (if I can ... I will have a house full of boys tomorrow, as Bubba told li'l Bubba he could have some friends over to watch Alien vs. Predator)
Thank you all so much!
Many Blessings to all,
Hms

Praise The Lord!
Okay, I am finally home, finally able to get to my computer (my house is full of boys celebrating -- another praise, I am so glad I only have ONE son, LOL!)
Here's the scoop:
He tested out at college level in Reading/Comprehension, college level in Sentence Structure/English Skills! His math was a bit lower than we thought he would be, but still high enough to qualify for the program he wants to get in!
Here's what the College Counselor said: He definitely qualifies for the Applied Welding Technologies Program. She said they are looking for serious-minded, committed students who want to pursue this as a career goal, not a hobby. By his entrance essay, she said it was obvious this was exactly what my son desired (he said in his essay that his goal is to own his own welding business and be self-sufficient!) She was also TOTALLY impressed with the recommendation letter from the college professor that my son took a shop elective from at UF. She said she couldn't remember a time when a student actually pursued their desires outside of the school yard! She also said that because we were so quick in getting his application in and coming in for the CPT testing, his application will be at the top of the list (the system is set up on a first-come/first-served basis).
The bad news: I thought there were only three positions open in the particular vocational program that he wants (Applied Welding), but I was wrong. There are only three positions TOTAL for the ENTIRE genre of vocational programs for homeschoolers!
So now we play the waiting game. She said that we should know for sure if he was accepted into the program by the middle of May (we will receive a letter).
Thank you all SO VERY MUCH for all your prayers, good wishes and thoughts. We definitely felt them, and I know the Lord is faithful to give us that which He had planned for us in His Will. My heart just swells with gratitude toward you all, and I am most humbly thankful!
From the bottom of my heart,
Thank You ALL!
Many Blessings,
Hms
Congratulations, obviously you did a great job.

*** UPDATE ***
Got a call today from the Dual Enrollment Department. My son now has to schedule his "interview" with the Professor of the Applied Welding Technologies Department. Li'l Bubba is supposed to call and speak with the Professor tomorrow afternoon, and arrange an appointment time for his interview (Mom can't help here, he has to do it all on his own  ).
The woman I spoke with was a REAL biddy! She made it quite clear she doesn't care much for homeschoolers, and not in so many words, but inferred that it was not HER idea to allow my son's application to go through. She was HIGHLY critical of his math scores, although previously we had talked at length with his College Guidance Counselor who had assured us his score was 12 points above the minimum requirement and that assistance through the college was not only available but absolutely NO PROBLEM or hindrance to his being accepted into the program. Well, I just hope we don't have to deal with that "secretary" or whoever she was, again.
Anyway, please pray for my son and this new obstacle. I know whatever is in his best interest will happen, but I can't help being a Mom, :smirky: . I'll let you all know what happens after his interview.
Thanks for listening, the thoughts and prayers,
Many Blessings,
Hms

MORE Updates!! Can you believe this? What a day!
Li'l Bubba got a job today, AND a new truck! I just LOVE showers of blessings!
First, my sister-in-law and mother-in-law were working behind the scenes on his behalf, and we didn't know a thing about it. Li'l Bubba is going to start work next Monday afternoon for the large residential plumbing contractor that my sister-in-law works for. He's going to be the in-house stock boy! If he does a good job (by the time of his evaluation, which is six weeks from hire), they will offer him a full time position for the summer as an apprentice! He's only going to start out at $100/week, but hey, that's more than he was making just doing his school work, LOL (which, by the way, he STILL has to finish his school year -- evaluations are May 24th, another small prayer request, LOL).
Anyway, when they called to let him know about the job offer, they said that my Mother-in-law's brother (li'l Bubba's Uncle) is selling his Toyota Tacoma (just happens to be the SAME type of truck WE just bought, only his is an older model), and is going to make a deal with my son for it! We had actually given him our old car (Ford Taurus), but it really needs a lot of work -- a LOT of work. Now we are going to try to sell it ... with what we might be able to get for the car (hoping $500) plus his Savings Bonds from his Gramma's that we have been saving up (that he didn't know anything about), and the money from his new job, he'll have a GREAT little truck!
Now for the third strike we need ... if the college interview goes well, he'll really be on his way!!
Oh man .... it just hit me .... my little pookie-bottom isn't my little baby anymore! Man, I feel old.
Thanks for the prayers and thoughts, again! Ya'll are the BEST!!
Will let y'all know more tomorrow after he calls the college Professor.
Blessings,
Hms

Prez,
If he, and the girl, survive such torture, they will have both passed the first hurdle. Supreme embarassment is the tool of the parent in weeding out REAL feeling from infatuation, LOL.
(Calling the Professor this afternoon, will update later on when I know the date/time of the interview.)

True. I've been following and good luck to you and pookie-bottom
We live parallel lives, my oldest too has his first job, first car and scouting colleges. Getting old does have it's upside though - they can do so much more for us now :thumb:

Okay, li'l Bubba just got off the phone with the professor. His interview is scheduled for next Tuesday morning (4/19/05) at 9am. Li'l Bubba said the professor sounded really nice on the phone, even joking with him about him being a "real" welder. He's looking forward to the interview, and so is li'l Bubba -- he's just real scared about saying the right things (he's not much of a speaker, more of a do-er). Any and all prayers and thoughts sent out for him will be greatly appreciated! I'll let y'all know more Tuesday afternoon!
Thanks for all your support!

Sorry I'm late. Wow Homes I can see the Lord working from day one on this one. I think it's a given that he's going to be accepted. Welders make a ton of $$$$$$$$$. Forget about that nasty lowly secretary. She has no say so. She just sounds like she needs prayer as she sounds miserable. Either that or she's a liberal beyond help. I'll keep you and Little Bubba in my prayers.

What warlady said. Pardon my late arrival. Just from reading your posts Homeschool I can see how God has been helping you all out in a time of great need. Perhaps I can PM/share some of my stories about Christ helping me out in my life. It is 6:00 AM my time, TUESDAY and I AM RIGHT NOW going to pray for your son. Congrats on the truck, I know how great it feels to finally get your own wheels. Take care and wish him luck.
BTW how old is your son?

Czech,
Thank you so much. Yes God has been truly moving in our family. I am so greatful for His intervention in everything. I know you understand that, and your words do mean a lot to me. I would love for you to share some of those stories with me! Feel free to PM anytime!

*** UPDATE ***
Li'l Bubba had his interview this morning, and it went FANTASTIC!! The College Coordinator for the VoTech Program was very nice. He took my son in first thing, and they began talking. My son took examples of his welding (a pipe & hinge he welded) and some pictures of when he took that shop class at the University last year (an impressive touch, even the Coordinator agreed!).
He said he would let the Dual Enrollmant Coordinator know and make his recommendation on li'l Bubba's behalf. He then took li'l Bubba on a tour of the class facilities and equipment, and then to meet the College Professor. Apparently, li'l Bubba made an impression because the Prof gave him the class syllabus and a copy of the coursework used in the program to review! They all talked for a while, and after he returned to the office, he gave us very positive feedback on li'l Bubba's chances.
Now we play the waiting game. We are SUPPOSED to hear something by mid-May. If I have not been contacted by May 15th, I am to call the dual enrollment office.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU all for your prayers, good thoughts, and well wishes. I claim them and will rely on them over the next weeks (I am a worry-wort, could you throw in a couple for me too :smirky: ). Again, thanks so very, very much!
