An Australian reporter or journalist visited our school yesterday. He covers all of Europe for Australia's national newspaper, and he was in Iraq for a while. He was kidnapped in Iraq for a week (and obviously he's safe now). Here are some interesting things he told us:
• The CNN people's bodyguards there are armed, and they shoot people. They're not even soldiers and the KILL people!!! That reminds me of a quit smoking ad, where they have a list of all the ingredients in cigarettes, and the slogan is "This is what we know. Imagine what we don't."
• It's not at all like movies, where you can hide behind cars or thick walls. Bullets can go through cars unless you're hiding behind the engine. They can also go through brick walls that are about a foot thick (or wide?). I never did think a bullet couldn't go through a brick wall, but now I know for sure.
There are more things but I can't remember right now... I'll probably remember right after I click "post"
Oh and he saved that boy who lost both his arms, and lost both his parents from a bomb that the American military put somewhere. The American military's helicopter came and flew the boy (the reporter went with him) to Kuwait where there were better hospitals. The boy now lives in England with his Uncle.
The reason he and the people with him were kidnapped, is because they thought they were spies. They convinced them that they weren't spies by saying that it would be stupid of a spy to go into that city. They stayed in a hotel for a week, and then some American military people came and the kidnappers ran away.
