 I have a question, and thought y'all wouldn't mind helping me out a bit.
Bubba and I have never actually bought a vehicle before, and we are going to be doing so soon. We visited three dealerships yesterday, and another today. We sort of know what we are looking for, but not what to expect from the sales people. I was hoping for any and all advice y'all might spare.
We need to get a truck, because we have to be able to haul my daughter's horse (16.2 hands, 1300 lbs) and trailer. We need four doors, or at least extended cab to have enough room from the kids. We are thinking we need to get one at least 3-4 years old, to be able to pay the payments. We have about $5000 to put down, so we thought probably something around $15,000 would do us.
My question(s): If we deal with a dealer, do we get extended warranties, or are they just a waste of time? What is the typical length of a vehicle loan? How do you haggle with a dealer...do you make a counter offer of a percentage less than what the asking price is?
I know, I'm a dolt . . . we have always bought REALLY used cars, or gotten second hand ones from family members. I appreciate any help y'all can give -- thanks bunches!

Well, since nobody bothered to reply, I don't suppose anybody is really interested in the outcome. But for kicks, I'll post it anyway.
We bought a 2001 Toyota Tacoma yesterday. We ended up having to put $7,000 down, and our payments are $215 a month, so we can live with it. I absolutely LOVE the truck!
This is a picture of our ACTUAL truck that we bought yesterday:

I didn't see this post in time to reply. Sorry. My only suggestion was to avoid pushy salesman. I had one that with the help of his manager kept showing everything BUT what I wanted. I told him what I could swing and he wouldn't come close. I went elsewhere and got an identical vehicle with half the mileage of the one he showed me and for about $5000 less. We have been happy with it since.

Thanks for posting, Beo. Yeah, we had our fair share of pushy salesmen. One at a Ford Dealership, simply couldn't even WAIT until we got out of the car! As Bubba opened the driver's side door he actually stuck his head inside before Bubba could get out! Needless to say we did NOT buy our new truck at the Ford place! LOL
We're real happy with this truck. It's so pretty! (that's the girl comin' outta me, LOL) It's got all kindsa bells & whistles too!. The only problem with it right now is we have no where to go so we can drive it more, LOL! I won't let Bubba drive it to work: he works in a bad part of town, and vehicles have been vandalized often.
Anyway, thanks again Beo, for posting.

I know its a bit late, but I have found that you are better off waiting on the Extended Warranty. 20 years ago (Sigh, cant believe its been that long) I spent a few months selling cars, at that time you could wait until the Dealer warranty ran out before you bought the extended warranty. That way your Warranty didn't start until the Dealer one ran out.

WOW Unk, I didn't know you could do that! The truck we bought, even though a used truck, came with a 6-year/100,000 mile drive train warranty, but the guy (said) he threw in a bumper-to-bumper policy (because we were so nice, LOL).
Hey, as an aside, thanks Unk for sticking up for me on the thread about the death penalty. I appreciate your kind words! That was twice this week that I was particularly offended by a hostile poster -- hasn't happened to me on FC for a while! Thanks again!
Many Blessings,
Hms

Nice truck! Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I am a Chevrolet man myself, but just for laughs, try these out:
FORD - Fix Or Repair Daily, Found On Russian Dump, Found On Road Dead
HYUNDAI - How Your Usual Nitwit Drives An Import
And I can't resist these two, even if it means compromising my favor of Chevys:
FORD - First On Race Day
CHEVROLET - Cheap Heap Every Valve Rattles Oil Leaks Everywhere Too
:D

SO FUNNY you should say that, LOL, I am a chevy person myself, whilst my Bubba is a Ford-Man. Wanna know how/why we converted??? We already HAVE a small toyota pick-up (so old, back when it was first made it didn't have a model, was known by just "pick-up"! LOL) We inherited it from Bubba's Dad -- Bubba's still driving it to work; it just rolled 273,000 miles and still running strong!
You left a few out of your funny list:
GMC = Georgia Milk Cow
MOPAR = Molded Old Parts And Rusted
This next one you MUST forgive me for, I'll try to clean it up as best I can, I think you can figure out what the first word is though . . .
FORD = Fouled Over Rebuilt Dodge
You fooled me with the Chevy one though, hadn't heard that one before.

LOL, I have never heard the "MOPAR" one before! I have know people who have had the older Toyota pickups, or "pickettes", they're so small, and it seems the body rusts out before the engine ever misses a beat
There is a version for "PONTIAC" that I have also heard, but I don't think it's proper to post it on the forum. Good luck with your truck!

CHEVEROLET- Can Hear Every Valve Every Rocker Or Lifter Every Time
FORD (backwards) Driver Returns On Foot.
I have the same version for Pontiac and no, it is NOT appropriate for here. I like the Hyundai too since I drive one.
