Lottery Is Not the Answer
by Chris Neeley

On Tuesday of this week, House Speaker Jim Black told 400 business leaders at a meeting of North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry, "What we are now seeing is our money flowing out of the state. We are financing education in surrounding states. If they are going to play the lottery, let's keep the education money here."

Now let me get this straight. Speaker Black supports a state lottery in North Carolina because he wants to stop our citizens from spending their money on lottery tickets in Tennessee, Virginia and South Carolina. He appears to make a claim on our money by calling it "education money."

This was touted as the answer for the failing school system in Florida -- let's implement a Lottery, and the money collected would help fund education. Well, it worked so well we had to go back to the voting booth to reduce class sizes because the MONEY wasn't helping the problems. Now we need MORE money because reducing the class sizes means more teachers, more classroom space, etc.

Kinda makes me think of the assault on the tobacco industry which originated here in the great state of Flori-duh too. Let's link a tobacco tax with health care for children, while at the same time forcing the tobacco companies to fund programs to help people quit smoking, all while we need MORE smokers to buy MORE cigarettes so we'll have MORE money to fund health care for MORE children. Nice round-robin, dontcha think?

I am against the Lottery, on more than just moral grounds. This is NOT any way to financially help a school system, in my humble opinion.
