So What Can I Teach My Students?

I often write about college students being forced to censor their views for their professors, but I do not think I have ever written about a professor who is being attacked by his students. It is not even clear if the professor in question is conservative, but that doesn't matter when we are talking about the freedom of ideas.
The rest of the article below, and you gotta read it to get it (the title of this thread):
Collegiate Network - Publications - Stop the Presses (http://www.isi.org/cn/pub/stp.aspx?id=378)

It was hard to crop this to such a tiny piece of the article -- I really do strongly encourage you to follow the link. The story is not long, and you'll get the point pretty quick.

"The ACLU has taken his case and while they have said they do not agree with his views, they do think he should be able to teach the theory that surrounds his field of study. If professors begin to censor their material because they hurt student’s feelings, academic freedom will never succeed."
Shocking.

In what respect?

In what respect?
In the respect that the ACLU is defending a man who spoke negatively of homosexuals. I felt the same way when they defended Rush Limbaugh.
Hmm...maybe they aren't so crazy and one sided after all? (Just for the record, I feel the same way about the NRA. They aren't hardly as awful as their opponents would have you believe.)

Um, yeah, the ACLU is every bit as crazy and one-sided as we think. One case doesn't balance the scores of hundreds on the other side.

But that's a speech issue (website). You make it sound as if the ACLU intends to defend criminal behavior.

Though I typically support gay-rights groups and their right to free speech, NAMBLA does not fall under that category. Defending NAMBLA is not an issue of defending free speech, because NAMBLA exists solely for the purpose of encouraging pedophilia and criminal behavior with little boys. Have you ever seen a NAMBLA magazine? They are literally nothing but pictures of little boys, cover to cover, for pedophiles to look at.
There is nothing moral, defendable, or Constitutionally protected about NAMBLA.
[EDIT] I've added this picture, found on the NAMBLA website, to give you an idea of what can be found in their magazines.

NAMBLA is different in what it defends than ACLU. I agree with you entirely about NAMBLA, I am disgusted by it. However, the point I made was about what ACLU is defending = speech.
This is similar to their defense of the Klan march as speech and not the Klan.

Okay, I'm sorry -- I don't know what has happened with this (link). I went to the CollegiateNetwork, under the Stop The Presses headline. Looks like they keep op-eds online for only a short period of time, then rotate them out. I cannot find the piece referenced, although I DO find several other articles by this particular author, Kellie Smith.
I look to the Admins and Mods to help me on this one. I simply do not know what to do from here. I will check in the Administration portion of FC and post the question -- I'll let y'all know what the answer is.
Sorry for the inconvenience!

HS if you can't find the article then just post what you can remember and go on from there. If you have her email try emailing her and asking her if you can have a copy for discussion purposes.

Hello,
I am interested in some information on your article posted on the Collegiate
Network. I came across this article through another website, and referenced
your wonderful article at a posting board I participate in. I noticed that my link was no longer current, and I was unable to locate the article in its entirety anymore.
Is it possible to get a copy of the article, and permission to post it at the Posting Forum I participate in? I am including the link to the forum, and your referenced article, as well as that which I posted (below).
Thank you very much for your assistance in this matter.
Many Blessings,
Hms

Ms. Smith's Response:
Thanks for your email. It isn't a problem at all. I have the permalink
but I do not have it with me. I will send you the link tomorrow morning
when I get to work. I will also send you the background links that I
used to write the piece. I looked through your posting board because I
had never seen that one before. Thank you for sending that to my
attention. I will get you the info you need in the morning.
