An Oregon Army National Guard soldier from Bend was awarded the Silver Star — one of the military's highest honors — and became the first Oregon Guard member to receive it since World War II.
Sgt. Matthew Zedwick was awarded the Silver Star in a ceremony Wednesday in Iraq for his actions in a June 2004 ambush near Baghdad, according to a news release from Maj. Arnold Strong of the Oregon National Guard.
Zedwick is serving in Bravo Company of the 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, headquartered in Cottage Grove.
Zedwick's family could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Strong, who was at the ceremony, said the division commander, Maj. Gen. Pete Chiarelli, broke protocol and saluted Zedwick after giving him the medal.
