These riddles come from my daughter's reading assignment -- if you have read any of these books you might recognize them. She asked me some, and I could only answer two.

1. Thirty white horses on a red hill. First they champ, then they stamp, and then they stand still. What are they?

2. Voiceless it cries, wingless it flutters, toothless it bites, mouthless it mutters. What is it?

3. An eye in a blue face saw an eye in a green face. "That eye is like to this eye", said the first eye, "but in low place not in high." What is it?

4. It cannot be seen, it cannot be felt, it cannot be heard, it cannot be smelled. It lies behind stars, and under hills, and empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after, ends life and kills laughter. What is it?

5. A box without hinges, key or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid? What is it?

6. This thing all things devours, birds, bees, trees, flowers, gnaws iron, bites steel, grinds hard stones to mill, slays kings, ruins towns, and beats high mountain down. What is it?

Anybody know what famous book these riddles come from?
