Well, after spending a WONDERFUL day with my children and family celebrating my son's 16th birthday, we awoke this morning to get ready for church and found our horse had disappeared. No open gates, no broken fences, no avenue of escape evidenced anywhere. He must have jumped the fence.

We scoured the city, and finally found him -- Praise The Lord! Some wonderful soul had rounded him up and put him in the High School FFA pen with the cows and sheep.

When we got him home and looked him over, we saw the wound on his leg. It is about 1-1/2" in length horizontally, but doesn't appear deep or wide at all. Very bloody, and we wet a warm clean cloth and cleaned it as best we could.

Now the help:

Does anyone have any suggestions on what we need to put on the wound, or how to treat it? I know we have some horse-people on here -- Warlady and Rink (I hope y'all check this thread!). He's not limping, doesn't seem to be favoring the leg at all, but it is just a bit swollen. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated, helpful, and used!

I have several accident prone horses. Do you have some Betadine to cleanse the wound? Then...
You need to get some furacine ointment or some other antibiotic type spray or ointment on the wound. I would then dress it with sterile pads (4x4, etc) and then wrap with Vetrap (that stretchy stuff in a roll that only sticks to itself). Depending on how deep the wound is, the horse may need a shot of Procaine penicillin. All these things are available at the farm and ranch store or feedstore.
Holler if you need anymore help, or PM me for my phone #.

PH, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Okay -- Betadine I don't have, but should be able to get at a local place (they have it at grocery stores, don't they?). I have sterile pads, but no Vetrap or antibiotic spray. I do have that stretchy stuff that is used to wrap people sprains --- like for ankles and arms -- you think that would work? My daughter thoroughly cleaned the wound, we just don't have anything to put on it, but if the betadine will do, and we can use the gauze pads and stretch wrap that we have, we might be able to make do.

The feed / ranch stores in my area aren't open on Sunday's -- you think we'll be okay until tomorrow? It really seems like a superficial cut, it's not deep at all, and I think all the blood was due to him running around and all (blood pumping fast to the wound area). He's not favoring the leg or anything. Not even skiddish to the touch, let's us mess with it without any reaction. I'm trying to save myself an exorbinant vet bill for weekend/after hours charges, so I'm hoping we can home-treat him at least until tomorrow.

Thanks again, PH.

Maybe you can call the vet for advice?

The Furacin sounds like a good start, if you have some bag balm that also can be good to use.

Just make sure the wrap isnt too tight k.
