NEW YORK (Reuters) - A vast majority of Americans say "under God" should remain part of the Pledge of Allegiance in the wake of a court ruling that said the pledge is unconstitutional, a Newsweek magazine poll said on Saturday.

The survey showed that 87 percent support the phrase and 54 percent think the government should not avoid promoting religion. Additionally, 60 percent think that government leaders making public expressions of faith in God is good for the nation.

The poll was taken shortly after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco -- one of the most liberal in the nation and one whose decisions are frequently overturned -- ruled that the words "under God," added by Congress in 1954, violated the constitutional principle of separation of church and state.

Eighty-four percent said references to God should be allowed in public as long as they do not mention a particular religion.

The majority of American support prayer in school and look where it is.

What's with those two 9th CC morons who say "under God" is unconstitutional? Do they think the Declaration of Independence is "unconstitutional" as well?

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,..."

Who is this "Creator" they wrote about? The pink Energizer rabbit? NO, wait, I know, it must have been some "radical right wing fundy" who somehow snuck this in after all delegates had signed it.

IMO the problem isn't so much lawyers as lack of specificity in the Constitution. If we want prayer in the schools, "under God" in the pledge, "In God We Trust" on our money, the 10 Commandments in the public square, and other signs of respect for God, we need to amend the Constitution to that effect. If we want to declare America a Christian nation, we need to amend the Constitution to say as much.

Then the lawyers and fruitloop judges won't be able to push the meaning beyond or outside where it was meant to go, because it will BE where it was meant to go.
