NEW ORLEANS -- A judge was removed from the bench Monday because her office lost court transcripts or turned them in late or inaccurately, leading to the reversal of 11 convictions.
In its ruling, the state Supreme Court said the risk of further harm to the judiciary and the general public was "too great" if Criminal District Judge Sharon Hunter remained on the bench.
The convictions -- including four for murder -- had been thrown out by a federal appeals court. In six cases, the defendants had received life sentences for murder or serious drug crimes. One overturned murder case and two reversed drug cases resulted in the defendants being released.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But Justice Jeanette Theriot Knoll wrote in a concurring opinion that Hunter "has persistently blamed others, primarily the court reporters, for her failures, while she admits her conduct caused these catastrophic consequences."
