I know we have some wonderful peeps here who have experience in the horse field (Warlady, Rink, and PatriotHeart come to mind). I was hoping to wrack your brains a bit for some help.

Y'all know we purchased a new horse for my daughter, the picture is in one of the threads here in the Pets Forum. Anyway, today we went to a horse show and met the broker who assisted us in finding our horse. She gave us some interesting information, and I was hoping I could find out more about him ... and hoping you guys might be able to help me find WHERE I can get more information.

She told me he was "out of a Kentucky thoroughbred named DownTheHill. She also said his full-brother, just sold for $175,000! For some reason, our guy wasn't ever registered (as a race horse) or sent for training. We were hoping to find out if we could tack down his sire, and possibly through him, find his dam and get some history on him.

The only "paperwork" we have, is his Coggins, which doesn't list anything in Kentucky at all. No dam or sire listed.

Anybody got any ideas of where we can go from here in our search? I did a google of the name Downthehill, but it came up for a 3 year old gelding, and that can't be him because our guy is 8 years old.

Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I believe all purebred Thoroughbreds have lip tatoos, check under his upper lip, explain to him first why you are taking this liberty, etc etc Then you can check with the Jockey Club to see if he is registered. Or check with the jockey Club to see what foals cross reference to that dam. I can;t believe a purebred TB wouldn;t have been tattoed and registered as a foal, even if later he proved to be not suitable for the track. Arabs are often freeze branded on the neck, but I think TBs are all lip tattoed.
You probably know this but "out of" means the dam and "by" is the sire.

Actually, I did NOT know that, PH . . . and I do most certainly thank you for the information. My daughter picked one of the only few things I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about . . . horses. I mean, I once worked for a horse farm (when I was a kid), and I do know how to ride, but that's the extent of my "knowledge", LOL.

I'm not sure I understand what the lady was telling me. I don't know her personally, she was introduced to me by a mutual friend (my daughter's trainer's mother -- a personal friend of mine). The lady was actually the 'broker" who sold the horse to my trainer's boyfriend (who has his own farm training and giving lessons) -- they all had been looking out for my daughter for a horse of do-able price and adequate for her use (hunter progressing to jumper).

He's a really beautiful horse, and he's filling out so nicely. I can't imagine that he wouldn't have been a good racer, he's fast as lightning when he wants to go. I'll have my daughter check his lip tomorrow for the tatoo. All I know is, the broker lady said for "some reason" he wasn't registered and sent to training. She speculated that he was held back as a "pet" for the farm's owner's high schoo/college aged daughter to ride. I do know he is 8, and has had no formal show training (hunter, jumper, or anything).

I just thought it would be nice to know more about him ... his breeding, farm origination, miscellaneous info, etc. I did some more net-digging, and came up with the name of the vet that pulled his coggins last August (that was prior to our purchase in November). I thought I would write to them to see if they had any info on him, or could direct us to someone that did.

Anyway, if anyone thinks of anything else I could be doing, don't hesitate to shout it out (or at the very least, write it in the thread, LOL)

Sounds like you have a beautiful animal. I don't know anything about hunting down a registration for a horse. You would think the person you bought him from would know.
