Words Mean Things<O:p</O:p

After thinking, for some time, about the words of a fellow Freecer’s post concerning the relevance of the Declaration of Independence contrasted to federally-granted individual rights, I was reminded of Red Skelton’s commentary on the Pledge of Allegiance. While to Mr. Skelton the words of the pledge had appeared to become monotonous to some, it seems to me like the DOI’s words are being twisted, altered and distorted by those who would push an antirights, or at the very least, special rights position. I would like to try my hand at restoring them to their proper context and intent by dissecting and examining the opening clause word by word, upon which all other words follow and rely.

We, The founding fathers of this great nation, a committee united in purpose and plan, Hold, understand, affirm and confirm, do grasp fully and with certainty, These Truths, specific undeniable, genuine, and real, no doubt that they are facts, To be, the are what they are, without hesitation or reservation, Self-Evident, obvious, plain, and clear, existing without prior need for permission, That All Men, ALL of mankind, every representative life of every human person, Are Created, inherent in the individual make up, made, fashioned and formed, Equal, starting life same as any other, balancing potential and opportunity, That They, all aforementioned, now and yet to come, without omission, exclusion, or prohibition, Are Endowed, pre-established, provided without pre-qualification, Not earned, bought, or stolen, instead given, By Their Creator, the One, the Entity, the Originator, responsible for all mankind, With Certain, precise, particular and specific, not to be confused with or overridden by any other, Unalienable, absolute, immutable, and incontrovertible, unable to be challenged or refuted, Rights, qualities, privileges, lawful claims that constitute what is correct, just, proper or honorable, That Among These Are, a listing of existing. included by reason of their relationship to each other, Life, the express permission to exist, to be, from one’s beginning to one’s end, not to be confused with how, which comes after, Liberty, emancipated with autonomy, and authorized for self-determination and independence, And, in addition to, yet preceded by, the above, Not to be excluded or separated from them, finally, and last for a reason, The Pursuit Of Happiness, free to seek and go after, that which makes one fulfilled, content, and satisfied, so long as it does not infringe upon the first two rights of others.

Now, revisited, are the very words, on which our lives as free Americans are established, we the citizens of the greatest nation known, and recognized worldwide, as the United States of America.

"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness--"<O:p</O:p

How any fellow citizen can say these words are not relevant to, or do not apply, to all, born or unborn, or to infer they do not supercede and precede all rights and laws federal and state, seems to me, is to show them, not only ignorant of the history and creation of the very country they call home, but most certainly incapable of distinguishing the difference between federal- and state-granted rights.<O:p</O:p

Just imagine the shame, the heartbreak, the disgrace, if this type of person, or persons, were allowed to pervert the very foundation of this land, and to propagate and proliferate the rejection of the very essence of the words written so long ago by those who knew what it means, what it costs, what it requires, what it takes, and what it is, then and, still relevant now, to be, free.<O:p</O:p

Oh wait, we don’t have to imagine, now do we, this has already happened . . .<O:p</O:p

Yes, and a very good explanation of why the right to life is a fundamental human right given by God and not subject to science or the choice of another.

The 13th, 14th and 15th amendments connected the DoI to the constitution, particularly the 14th, even though it was aimed at ending slavery.

WRT to Home's mention of Red Skelton...

For those who weren't around then, in 1969, the famous comedian, Red Skelton, related the story of his teacher, Mr. Laswell, who felt that his students thought of the Pledge of Allegiance as merely something to recite in class each day. He thus gave life and meaning to what had become rote words. Here's what he said on the show that immortalized his comments.

"I've been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you. If I may, may I recite it and try to explain to you the meaning of each word?"

I

me, an individual, a committee of one.

Pledge

dedicate all of my worldly goods to give
without self pity.

Allegiance

my love and my devotion.

To the flag

our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom.
Wherever she waves, there's respect because
your loyalty has given her a dignity that
shouts freedom is everybody's job!

of the United

that means that we have all come together.

States

individual communities that have united into 48
great states. Forty-eight individual communities
with pride and dignity and purpose; all divided
with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a
common purpose, and that's love for country.

And to the republic

a state in which sovereign power is invested in
representatives chosen by the people to govern.
And government is the people and it's from the
people to the leaders, not from the leaders to
the people.

For which it stands,
one nation

one nation, meaning "so blessed by God"

Indivisible

incapable of being divided.

With liberty

which is freedom -- the right of power to live
one's own life without threats, fear or some
sort of retaliation.

And Justice

the principle or quality of dealing fairly with others.

For all

which means, boys and girls, it's as much your
country as it is mine.

And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite
the Pledge of Allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United
States of America, and to the Republic for
which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all.

Since I was a small boy, two states have been
added to our country and two words have been
added to the pledge of Allegiance...

UNDER GOD

Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that is
a prayer and that would be eliminated from
schools too?

Me too! He was a very great man. I remember watching his specials with my Mom and Dad. I don't remember his actual show, but I do remember those specials. I also think I remember seeing him actually "do" the pledge thing on television -- my mind fails me as to what I was actually watching, it might definitely have been his show, I just don't remember.

I have seen his artistic work too, although not in person. I paint and draw myself -- I like drawing better, but am not too shabby in the painting department. He had quite a gift, for sure.

I was SO inspired by his words! They are practically etched on my heart. That is why they came to mind when I was "debating" another poster about abortion, and whether it was a states rights or federal rights issue. To REALLY understand that is is a UNIVERSAL rights issue, one REALLY has to dissect the first words relevant to the country as a whole, and of course those are the words of the Declaration of Independence.

I can't improve on the comments that HS and others made, but my feedback was solicited, so here they are.

P.S.: It was my privilege to get a front row seat to see Red Skelton do a show in Houston many moons ago with my father. I was just a boy, but I remember it well, as well as his show on tv. How many entertainers would end the program by saying, "And may God bless." It is my fervent prayer that are sharing a laugh together in eternity.
