State Department of Education officials released raw results on state third-grade reading tests late last week after first denying the state had the data. The release of the unofficial results for each district and school came after the Rocky Mountain News filed an open records request.

The early results showed a 3 percentage point decline in third-grade reading scores statewide, from 74 percent to 71 percent, of students reading at proficient and advanced levels. That's the first dip since the standardized test's inception in 1998, when 66 percent of third-graders scored at proficient and advanced.
