I guess as a high school social studies teacher and head football coach, I don't see anything wrong with how they are posting. I don't know what is happening in Texas, but here in MN we are seeing declining enrollment in our schools. That means we are cutting teaching staff in order to balance our ever tightening budgets. As a result every hire is expected to do more - extra-curriculars included. We can't afford to hire someone who cannot coach as well.

For instance, I only have 2 coaches for 4 positions right now. I hope and pray that when they hire an elementary teacher, that person can also coach football.

That said, they should not hire a bad teacher to get a good coach. I think there are many people out there who are great coaches and great teachers.

 A few, maybe. Most coaches do not make good teachers. Our schools should be placing a priority on academics, & that should include hiring teachers with that same priority.

I know that I am totally too through with most of the Texas schools. My son is now enrolled in Belton schools which are thought to be some of the best. I hope so. The school district here did not appear to be in the best interest of the child, regardless of the admirable slogan. He did have some great teachers in this school district, unfortunately, the administration was the problem in my view. That is what makes the good teachers leave. If teachers were paid commenserate with what we expect from them, we would have alot better teachers in our schools. I see teaching being oriented only on passing the TAKS test, forget if they know the foundations behind the skills. Whatever happened to Phoenics? That's how I learned to read, and I love to read now. None of my kids were taught phonenics and none of them like to read. I think we need to go back to the basics. By the time i left 4th grade, I knew all my times tables by heart through 12. I think that is unheard of based on my own children...they have to stop and think, mulitply another number, etc. etc. It's something that just pops into my head.... Moral of the story, go back to readin and writin and rithmatic.

 That, too, is part of the problem. I'm losing my job, because my district is cutting teaching positions to save money. I notice that not one administrator's position is beïng lost.

That is what makes the good teachers leave.

 Actually, if a few more would leave, I'd have an easiër time finding another job. But, I digress. A lack of discipline & academic standards are also a factor for the ones who do leave. This is usually rooted in poor school policies that the teachers have no say in, but it'll be the teachers who get blamed.

I see teaching being oriented only on passing the TAKS test, forget if they know the foundations behind the skills.

 No kidding. It's not just phonics that have been lost, but math skills, too. Thanks to the TAKS, math teachers in Texas are under pressure to let kids use calculators, & that's destroying their understanding of math.
