Stuart Townsend, previously seen as Anne Rice's vampire protagonist in Queen of the Damned and as Dorian Gray in the film adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, has been tapped to play Jeff Rice's intrepid reporter that faces the supernatural, Carl Kolchak.

The new pilot for The Night Stalker is being produced by former X-Files Executive producer, Frank Spotnitz, and was commissioned by ABC, who is eager to find the next big supernatural franchise. The evidence of tinkering with the concept is evident just by the casting notices: Kolchak has been given a "partner" to be played in the pilot by Gabrielle Union, soon to be seen in the re-make of the television classic, The Honeymooners.

...Irish actor Stuart Townsend is ABC's new Kolchak in the drama pilot "Night Stalker" with Gabrielle Union also joining the cast. Townsend is most remembered for his roles as Lestat in "Queen of the Damned", the devious Dorian Gray in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and appearing alongside girlfriend Charlize Theron in the films "Trapped" & "Head in the Clouds". His only TV credit to date was his one-off appearance last week as a sexy 'pansexual' pastry chef who seduces both Will & Karen on NBC's "Will & Grace". "Kolchak" follows a reporter investigating various supernatural and supranatural creatures, ranging from aliens to vampires to Aztec sacrificial cults.

Kolchak starring and narrated by Darren McGavin was originally two made-for-TV movies... These movies proved popular enough that they were spun off into a series...

The original TV movies, The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler are available together on DVD from Amazon (I recommend them). (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00026L7OU/qid=1116554495/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-0570686-2280141?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846)

The original TV series is apparently also available from an independent source but I haven't seen it and therefore cannot verify its quality or recommend it. (http://www.empiricalfilm.com/products.php?iProductID=300&iCollectionID=69)

The original series can be seen on the SciFi Channel (schedule) (http://www.scifi.com/kolchak/)

I used to watch the original, too. I just hope they don't try to over dramatize the new version and dress up the lead actor as a rock star, but I have a feeling they will.

I hope and pray that the new show will not be a male version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." That would really suck. lol

The original was quirky, very entertaining and funny in its own weird way.

Special effects weren't the greatest, but we didn't know any better back then.

lol
