View Full Version : Do You Play Computer Games?

I love computer games, especially the role playing kind. Right now I'm hooked on the Neverwinter Nights series. It all started with Mario Bros. and it's never stopped. If you like playing computer games, or video game, I'd be interested in hearing what you like to play.

I'm pretty boring actually. I go through phases from wargames to card games to adventure. I like the classic Atari games, Texas Hold'Em, Bejeweled, and Tetris. I play Yahtzee and Backgammon with my sweetie through the net and also on my cell phone as single player.
What I really miss is the King's Quest games. I stopped at VII. Any ideas on modern "King's Quests" would be appreciated! I wasn't crazy about Myst. Would I like Riven, Exile, or Revelation?

Right now I have been hooked on Zuma, Bejeweled, and Spider Solitaire. I also have Tomb Raider, and several Star Trek games, but cannot get them to work on my computer for some reason. I had Myst, but I can't find it -- and I was really starting to get the hang of that one! I also have Monopoly, Boggle, Scrabble, Clue, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Frankenstein and The Mummy.
Oh, and of course my FAVORITE thanks to DoctorDoom -- The Dark Tower!
But, they're just not as fun to play by myself, though http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/images/icons/icon9.gif

Peach,
Oooh, I'm the wrong one to ask that, LOL. I have absolutely no idea if my computer will play it -- I have Windows XP Pro. Maybe somebody else would know if it would run on mine.
Did you beat it or just not like it? I cheated a bit . . . found a walkthrough that I was using when I hit a snag, LOL. I was doing fairly well on it too . . . but I simply cannot find it anymore (I have NO idea what "edition" it was, it was a gift from my kiddos, LOL).

Homes, it just isn't my cup of tea at all. I guess I'm a "classic gamer" and not too fond of overwhelming users with graphics, and sounds. My favorite games were the text based ones such as "Zork" on my C-64 and the "dungeon type" one before that. Granted there were no graphics but they were excellent, IMO!
Used to play Spades on MPlayer. Too bad MPlayer folded. Oh and Prince of Persia. I think that was Broderbund's first game. Burning Monkey still has net play. Might try that sometime.
Windows XP should be able to play Myst? I can send you the CD to try it out and if it works then keep it!

I play Americas Army, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Freelancer. All great games. Not that big of a fan of RPG's. They bore the hell out of me.

I like the RPGs too, but there hasn't been a real good one out this season.
I also enjoy wargames. Used to play wargames as tablestops some years ago, but you can't find anyone doing that any more.

Freecell, Spider Solitaire and occasionally Mahjongg are the extent of my "gaming".
Myst should run under XP. If it gets flaky, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Program Compatibility Wizard. Here's further info from Microsoft.
Run Older Programs on Windows XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/appcompat.mspx)
Windows XP has a good pinballl game built-in (screen-grab below). It's in the Start menu in Programs > Games.

My son has several "war games" pc games, one of them is called Red Alert, and he really like that one. Also, he has a game called Gearhead Garage where he builds vehicles, he likes that one a lot too.
My one addiction right now has got to be Zuma Deluxe, I have beat it three times, but I STILL play it, LOL.
I'm a chicken when it comes to trying new games, I'm scared to put them on my computer then not like them. Don't want to spend the money until I know if I like playing them, LOL. Oh yeah, and I have the Game of Life computer game too . . . I have more computer games than I thought, LOL. I have one of the SIMS too, came with my computer bundle, but I obviously don't know how to play it (right), and it seems purpose-less to me.
Course my daughter has all kinds . . . anybody want to play Barbie Riding Club, Let's Ride, or ZooTycoon? :smirky: How 'bout you guys, up for a game of My Little Pony or Barbie Detective?
Peachdiane

Does that Barbie come with cowboy boots ready to ass-kick the abusive Kens with pimp slap backhand? :rotflmbo:
Haven't heard of Red Alert. The ones I have are Combat Mission and Medal of Honor. IMO Medal of Honor, while it has realistic explosions such as this: http://images.apple.com/games/articles/2002/06/medalofhonor/images/medalshot4.jpg
it contains less violence than Combat Mission, i think.
Take a peek and let me know if you would enjoy a try at playing THIS. (http://www.freeverse.com/solace/)It's set so that we could play with one another over the net.
It says we'd be sleep deprived but I already am so what's the harm? :)

I play mostly Enemy Territory, a free Return To Castle Wolfenstein game. I also do some Half Life2 and Star Trek: Bridge Commander. Online games are my cup of tea.
I see Conserv Atticus plays Freelancer. I used to play it often but I wore myself out on it. Great game, though. I also used to spank Rink in Starsiege.

You're right, they don't.....and it got annoying. I had pirates trying to toll me in Freelancer. I'd fight them. If they lost, they'de still demand payment. (Yeah, right!) If I lost, I paid and went about my business. Some just blew me up and then demanded payment. Not likely!!
BTW, I played alot on the Lansdale servers as Doc Holliday and I had some other ships...USS Antietam, Gettysburg and Manasses.

StarFleet Command (though it is a bit scratched up at the moment and is in a dark place somewhere), Klingon Academy, Startrek Armada (that one was a strategy game), and Startrek Elite Force (Based on the Voyager series, first person shooter.)
I also got the first three Delta Force games... Single player is easy, the real fun was in multiplayer... Big games, 30-50 people, capture the flags, king of the hill, fun! But they are old so no one plays much anymore. (I assume this, I have not checked for several years, but it probably isn't played anymore.)
"Tachyon: The Fringe": great game, I am told its like Freelancer. The voice actor for your character is Bruce Cambell from the Evil Dead movies, which makes the game much more enjoyable. Basically you play Jake Logan who is framed for a crime he didn't commit, and is exiled to the fringe of space where all the crazies are. You are a contract pilot and the storyline gives you options on how you want to go through the story.
You can either join the Bora... Who rebelled from Earth and became their own People out in the Fringe of Space, and help them protect their territory from the eeeevil Galspan Corporation.
Or you can become a Galspan pilot and kick some Bora terrorist butt so you may claim your rightful legal property.
Not that there is no good or evil in the game, when you play as one or the other they shape up, it is only when you fly against them that they get dirty. Ontop of the main storyline, you can take Jobs with other people along the way.
The people who made Tachyon are the same people who made DeltaForce, so its capable of massive games with 30-40 players, though it is old so no one plays it anymore... I checked not long ago, there were 3 people in the game but I was unable to say anything to them because I forgot which button was to talk. But the game has a wonderful single player so you can live without it.
Lastly, JediKnight 2: Jedi Outcast... Lightsabers&ForcePowers, nuff said.
I won't get any new computer games for a long time, due to the fact my computer can't handle any of the new games out there.
But I do have an X-box: Ninja Gaiden, fun and has great looking graphics, but braindead teenage story, and too pagan.
And Thief: Deadly Shadows... Not as good as the Demos for Thief 1 and 2 for the comp, but still fun if your into stealth and picking locks. (Best played the way it was meant to be played, which is first person mode and on Expert difficulty.) The story is pretty good... Or it could be that the story is braindead, and it's simply "Garrett" (you) who is a likable fella.
Oh, and I have discovered a new love for Adventure games... I've downloaded a few free ones made by people over the net, great stuff.
Edit: Forgot to mention I also own StarWars: Force Commander... Strategy game.
Edit: I forgot some more games! Aliens VS Predator and AVP2... The first one I gave to my father, the second one I still have. You can play as either the Aliens... Marines... Or Predators... If you play as a Marine, you will be freaked out constantly due to the fact everything can cut you up into little peices.
If you play as the Alien... Humans and Preds are not that scary. If you play as a Predator, you basically feel like a bad ass, so no problemo.

I think you can play spades on Gamespy, which took over Mplayer's territory. Mplayer sucked bigtime though, their servers crashed often and I wouldn't be able to sign on for the rest of the day. Anyway, GS is like Mplayer only more stable.
I bet you can also play Spades through MSN "The Zone", or Yahoo games.

I have, but I didn't like them that much. However, Baldur's Gate II and Planescape: Torment (both made by the same gaming industry) totally blew my mind. I recommend them both, despite them being 5+ years old.
If you're a hardcore, old-style D&D RPG player, you might like Geneforge and Avernum. They are relatively small games which don't place an emphasis on graphics, but have a great storyline and gameplay. You can download the shareware versions here: http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html

I own too many PC games to list, but if it involes guns or strategy...
I'm there.
I LOVE FREELANCER!!! There was this server that had a mod for it and it made like 25 new galaxies haha! And you could pilot star destroyers...
I am a geek :claps:!
I have a fondess for the Grand Theft Auto series and Halo... A game really has to be bad for me to not like it. Anyone seen the PS3 stats and Xbox 360 tech demos? Oh man! Killzone 2 and Prey look so awesome, now I have to get 2 new systems . Then four years later, a NEW one! Such a gimmick. And I fall for it every time.
For the record, I am 17 so it's perfectly normal for me to be obsessed with this stuff... so I hope.
Apollo, isn't Army of Darkness one of the classics?!
I still play a game called Starcraft for PC, a brother of Warcraft. A neglected one! Too many user made maps that go along the lines of "kill the president" or "Canada vs USA" (Rigged for Canada), but the game before the moron liberal youth invaded was awesome!
My name was Kyoji on Freelancer by the way...
I see the name Doc Holliday alot on the games I play, like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Call of Duty: United Offensive. Probably because he's a pop culture icon, huh?
I've said enough :soap:

Love Kyodai Mahjongg, play Pool m up and solitaire (I had the superb score on solitaire at one time of an entire game in under 60 seconds :D )
I also have Freelancer (but couldnt figgure it out so i gave up on it)
Got Wolfenstein but I have to get the correct patches in order to play the game online again (beo knows what I'm talkin bout, its a bear when trying to play with the punkbuster sometimes).
Also have medal of honor on this pc but it wont play and i cant get it off so.... its useless.
Love Starsiege and waiting for the Starsiege 2845 game to come out (gamers ared creating that one themselves)
O and Beo my dear, anytime ya wanna rematch in starsiege just lemme know I'll kick yo butt all over the place!!
I have other games too but just dont mess with em as much.
On my Xbox I absolutely loved Halo 2 got spoiled on that game and it seems i cant find anything to replace it lol.
I have other games for my Xbox as listed:
#1. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
#2. Halo
#3. Halo2
#4. Call of Duty: Finest Hour
#5. Brothers in Arms: Road to Holl 30

Holy Guacamole!!! Was Lazarus a dead guy? Does a wild bear sh....... Ahem...
Anyway... How did I miss this thread? I've been spending too much time in the political forums...
Im a PC game junky... I have a collection that is, by all human standards, embarrassing in its scope and size...
I like most RPGs as well as shooters... Im a huge fan of the lovely and gracious (and long forgotten) Lara Croft... Call of Duty is the best WW2 shooter I have tried... Another great shooter (not a war game) is one called Max Payne (it has a sequel that is just as good too)... This is a "cop in the big city" shooter that feels like a Mickey Spilain novel - lots of cheesy film noir monologues - "She walked into my office on legs that ran all the way to her ass...":D... You can find these two games in a combo-pack now... If you see it, buy it...
One of my absolute favorite RPGs is a series that is very difficult to find in the stores these days - Fallout... Its a post-nuclear Mad Maxx sorta game... It had a huge following until the publisher went out of business... If you see this game and you are an RPG fan, buy it...
If you are a fan of realistic military style shooters I recommend you pick up any of the Tom Clancey games - Rainbow Six (and all its sequels), Ghost Recon, SplinterCell... All of these games have the realism of a military trainer... I never tire of these games...
LadyHawk, I once picked up NeverWinter Nights but I could not get it to run on my PC... Im currently planning out a PC Im going to build myself so I hope to be able to try that one again...

Lazarus

Stuck at the end? What's hangin you up? I had a little trouble once I got inside the Citidel but once I got past that hump it was pretty much just fightin your way thru... The ending is a little tricky but if I recall you need to just work fast and avoid getting hit... The final fight as I recall wasnt all that tough for me... But I have always noticed that when comparing notes with other players, the parts that hang me up are easy for them, and visa versa...
I do like the new engine on Halflife 2 and I would like to replay the original on that engine... So even though I have HL2 already, I may spring for the big set with the original games that were republished under the new engine...

I have all three Delta force games as well as BlackHawk Down... All great games... I've been playing Delta force for a long time...
I also recommend - if you can still find them - NovaLogic's F-16 and Commanche Gold games... Super realistic air combat... Im particularly fond of the Commanche game... Really great with a joystick...
Also if you like this modern warfare shoorter type, try Full Spectrum Warrior... Very much like Blackhawk Down but plays in a squad format... And I think its graphics are even more realistic... Look for it...
I would love to play some online games but Im way out in the country and all I have is dial-up... The lag time kills me in online play...
Beowulf, I remember that fight, but I cant really tell you what to do other than to try to stay behind cover as best as possible, and concentrate your fire on a single ship until it is killed... That's a strategy that works well for me... Then you have cut your enemy's firepower in half... As I recall I did die in that fight a few times but its not impossible to win... Use your cover...

PC: Unreal Tournament 2004 and UT'99 are my two big games. I play them online when I can. I also enjoy Battlefield 1942. C&C:Generals and Warcraft III are fun, but I usually suck pretty hard at them, so it's hit or miss there.
X-Box: Burnout 2/3 are pretty good. I'm also real good at Soul Calibur II. the KOTOR series are fun, if a bit dry at times. And I just finished Jade Empire. That was a good time.
My PC gaming is in the crapper right now, though. One of the RAM sticks in my computer went dead, so I only have 256MB of RAM. I'll probably be getting a 512 stick soon. :devilange

For anyone who likes futuristic shooters I recommend Unreal II... Great graphics... And its linear enough so that you cant really get lost, but still challenging... And it has some humor in it too...
Also, if anyone can still find this one - Omicron - definitely pick it up... This game is huge and has the most extensive maps I've ever seen in a game... Its so big I never finished it... Its hard to find these days but you can sometimes see it in the old out-of-date cheap rack, or you may be able to find it online...

I strongly disagree. If you want a decent FPS, try the original Unreal, which is a gem. Unreal II was a huge letdown for me. Unoriginal story, boring weapons, lame graphics (for its time), bad AI, weak enemies, repetitive maps, no memorable moments, no multiplayer... need I say more?
However, the original Unreal is breathtaking. I challenge you not to gasp in awe when you reach the Sunspire. There are so many suspenseful moments in the game, such as your first fight with a Skaarj, or when you face off a Titan in the Dark Arena.
Doom 1 and 2 never lose their appeal. Try to avoid Doom 3, it's pretty lame, repetitive and tediously, unnecessarily long, like a J.K Rowling novel.
If you want to play survival horror with a great storyline, try Silent 1 or 2 (especially 2, which is unique in my opinion, and introduces a moral dilemma)

I strongly disagree. If you want a decent FPS, try the original Unreal, which is a gem. Unreal II was a huge letdown for me. Unoriginal story, boring weapons, lame graphics (for its time), bad AI, weak enemies, repetitive maps, no memorable moments, no multiplayer... need I say more?...
Try to avoid Doom 3, it's pretty lame, repetitive and tediously, unnecessarily long, like a J.K Rowling novel...Dont listen to this guy - He was banned... Obviously a sociopath... Listen to your uncle Laz...
And I just got Doom III - And all I have to say is - DAMN! Dont play this one in the dark - Not if you want to sleep later... Graphics are outstanding... Just turn the music off and play it with the sound effects only - Sheesh! That is one creepy game...:uhh:

Right now, I'm sure enjoying playing my first online game--P u z z l e P i r a t e s. Check it out!
This is one our whole family can get into, including distant cousins, aunts, and uncles. My nephew worked his way up, bought a shoppe and a ship, etc. It's a great way to practice free enterprise business, as you have to buy and sell commodities to use in making the products you sell in your shoppe, etc. I haven't done any of that yet, although I have a labor badge and "work" in several shoppes to make money. Mostly, though, I enjoy hanging out in my shack and chatting with family members or pillaging on the high seas!
BTW, some oceans are subscriber only, but Viridian Ocean and Sage Ocean are free games.

I play WWII Combat Mission ....
http://www.battlefront.com/index.htmIm a huge fan of Call of Duty... It seems to be the most realistic one I've ever tried... Follows actual battles in the war but you play from the viewpoint of a common soldier in a typical infantry unit...
Im waiting for the price to drop a bit on Call of Duty 2...

I should check out Runescape. I play too many games. Right now I'm sort of hooked onto World of Warcraft. The only problem I have with that game is it's boring if your friends aren't playing.

I have played some air combat, strategy, and first person shooters in the past however I am now hooked on MS Flight Simulator 2004. I know it may sound boring initially: the thought of flying without shooting anything down, but the simulation is what you make it. It's fulfilling to put yourself into various flight scenarios and succesfully accomplish your objectives. Around Thanksgiving I decided to virtually fly to Alaska in a Cessna Skyhawk and once there, do cargo flights in a DC-3 (the Gooney Bird). Of course I split the flying up over several days. I can assure you that landing in Barrow,AK in the middle of winter coming out of a snow storm is no easy feat. Speaking of weather, the simulator has the ability to incoporate real-world weather via the internet utilising current real-world weather station data. It can be set to automatically update as often as every 15 minutes.
There is a huge community built up around MS flight simulator with many addons (some free, some not) available. One of the coolest things that I am just starting to get into is online flying. At least one site even has people acting as air traffic control. Some folks take it so seriously that they build mock-ups of cockpits with multiple screens and realistic controls in which to fly. (I think I would go ahead and spend that money on obtaining my private pilots license)
Another nice thing about MSFS 2004 is that it's something you can enjoy with the kids while at the same time making it educational.

3 games I recommend are:
Tom Clancy's SplinterCell: Chaos Theory... A Stealth Action game. The Graphics are simply amazing, but it is not for someone who likes blowing everything to hell.
That is for the X-Box, and also for the PC and maybe the Gamecube (not sure).
My Neices and Nephew own a Gamecube, and whenever they come over they bring that along... However, it seem they can't beat their own games, but I can, and I like to beat them.
007: Everything or Nothing. Original plot, not very realistic (you can survive shots from a Tank or a Shotgun), but quite fun. It plays from a Third Person perspective.
Metroid Prime.. Nice Graphics, and a interesting story. Lots of obnoxious puzzle stuff, but I still like it.
But, SplinterCell is my favorite of all three.

If you guys like scary games, I recommend Aliens Versus Predator 2. The Marine Campaign leads you into dark tunnels, small ventelation shafts, desolate human bases, and an alien hive. You face off against Predators, and lightning fast aliens who come at you when you least expect it. The game does such a good job at messing with you, that when I first played it I wasted several ammo clips shooting at just air.
You also get to play as the Predator from the movies... Cloacking device, heat vision, shoulder cannon, and many other alien weapons. You also get to play as the Alien, you start out as a facehugger from the movie, and you have to find yourself a victim. The beginning of the next level starts you off inside the man's chest, and you have to manually bite your way out. A nice and sick touch lol.
Aliens vs Predator (the first one), is also the same way, (though as the alien, you start out as a grown drone in the game, and the sound effects are not totally like in the movies) though I think avp2 perfects the story, gameplay, and fearfactor. These are old games, but I think you can still get the cds off of ebay, or amazon.

I played Call of Duty 2 on an XBOX 360 recently and was blown away...what a great war game. The scenery...the sounds...you feel like you're almost really there. I highly recommend!
You get to play as a Russian, a Brit and of course an American. I'm pretty good with a sniper rifle. If we can get some other players from here maybe we can set up an XBOX Live session.
