View Full Version : What to do with AOL stuff

I'm using NS 7.0 now and there's some AOL stuff that comes with it. I don't use AOL and wonder if I can clean some of that junk out w/o creating other problems?

What kinda stuff?

What is NS?

Peachdiane

NS= Netscape

IIRC the stuff that comes with installing 7.0 is instant messenger, RealPlayer, etc. Assuming you use Windows and the software is already installed, perhaps add/delete programs in control panels will help. (Sorry I'm not much of a Windows user).

Now if you're on a mac (my forte) just drag the folders to the trash can and empty trash. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Uninstall netscape and use mozilla. Mozilla is netscape without the extra BS. http://www.mozilla.org Make sure to download the latest STABLE release. This will be marked on the download page.

32 megs for me with 4 windows open. I have 512 MB of memory so I guess I kinda take memory requirements for granted. Mozilla is still a good browser regardless.

Oh now you've gone too far Rad! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon1.gif

Don't cop out to the mentality of non-Mac users who subscribe to the notion that Macs are for the mentally inept who can't handle a "real" computer.

You can have your incompatible hardware that plugs and prays, your IRQ conflicts, and XP's constant nagging for all your personal secrets.

Not a real computer! Harumph!

If you don't see AIM in your Remove Programs applet in the control panel, you should find an uninstaller program in either C:\program files\AOL Instant Messenger or C:\program files\Netscape\Communicator.

Macs are OK for everyday stuff, but for people that need to do computationally intensive work they don't fly anymore. The "less is more" mentality has contributed to that. That's OK, just don't tell me a "grape" computer will do what I need it to. (I am one of those that uses it for computationally intensive tasks.)

I run Windows XP. Pentium 4 2138 Mhz, 512 MB RAM, 80GB HDD. It handles pretty much anything.

I'm not going to get into a Mac vs.PC debate which has raged for years. A search online gives all the comparisons and benchmark duels. I didn't make myself clear either as I wasn't thinking of the iMac or eMacs but rather the PowerMacs.

You can also make a Mac intensive by putting Linux on it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Software can't make up for lack of computational power. But that's OK, Macs have their place.

Indeed they do. They make GREAT doorstops and paperweights.http://freeconservatives.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/icon73.gif But, they're UHHHHHH-GLY!

THAT is NOT a computer. That's a toy for the guys in tie-dyed shirts and Birkenstocks who think that knowing how to use Photoshop is the quintessence of computing skills. YUCH!!!

BTW, be ready to fork out the bucks. These puppies ain't cheap at $1700 minimum (prices from Apple's online store).
http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/236/store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/productshotimac2002.jpg

And then there are THOSE grotesque things. They might look "kewl" in a teenager's bedroom, but for anyone with taste that extends beyond the tongue, that's junk. And, the cheapest one of those sells for $1200.
To be fair, the PowerMacs are terrific with graphics and color rendition, which is why the Photoshop users love the things. But, for business oriented applications, PCs rule the roost.

BTW, re the ridiculously inflated specs for the G4s, they're based on a maxed-out machine running Photoshop filters tailored specifically for the hardware. Real-world numbers are substantially less.

In the end it's a matter of preference, but my home-built box (< $1500 with a 19" Viewsonic graphics monitor) is a lot more machine than anything from Cupertino at a comparable price. And, it LOOKS like a computer.

I have Trillian, which supports IRC, AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger, without all the extraneous crap and without the spyware functions. You can check it out here (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com).

By the way, Realplayer used to be one of the original spyware applications, and was damned difficult to uninstall. I assume it's still the same way, but since I have it effectively banned, I haven't seen it in a while.

Yes but the real cost of a computer is more than just the price on the box.

See, Windoze users buy and say, "Uh oh, I haven't a clue how to run this stuff!" Out comes the wallet for training, maintenance, and repairs. And if time equals money then tack on the hours/days/weeks one spends trying to get the system's components to work together and laboriously learning how to use the new tools And then to make matters worse they gotta sit around and wait for the software and hardware vendors to stop jacking off and solve whatever the problem happens to be.

Secondly, the Mac package has always included features that PC users have to shell out more for. Standard Mac features are SCSI port, high quality sound, built-in networking, speech recognition, and so on. The thing is, once all the money is spent giving the PC all the neat stuff that comes standard on a Mac, suddenly the cost of your PC stops looking better.

Thirdly, Apple controls the creation, design and production of the hardware and the operating system of their units. This allows a high level of continuity within a network.

Lastly, motherboards have better quality. The speed of Macintosh computers has surpassed that of comparably rated Intel processors.

I'm sounding like a damned salesperson so I'll just concur with you that it boils down to a matter of preference.
