BAGHDAD, Iraq, June 16, 2005

Coalition Forces recovered two improvised explosive devices in south Baghdad June 13 with the assistance of a local resident.

In this case, U.S. military officials said, the local citizen was a fixture along these heavily-patrolled roads and is a reliable source of information for Soldiers operating in the area. He spends his days driving a donkey cart, scavenging. through abandoned buildings for anything of value, and is often confronted with the dangerous realities of Iraq.

1st Lt. Scott Alpaugh of B Battery, 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division was tasked with a routine mission to clear a major supply route of IEDs when the young man, driving his donkey, flagged down the patrol.

Through an interpreter, the man informed Alpaugh where two IEDs were hidden. Alpaugh instructed the young man to go to an Iraqi Police checkpoint for the purpose of protecting the donkey and cart while he directed the patrol to the location of the explosives.

The young man led the patrol to a deteriorated building that concealed the two IEDs. Two artillery rounds, a 122-millimeter and a 155-millimeter, already modified into IEDs were found. The IEDs were ready for emplacement and positioned near a road with a dangerous history of previous attacks.
