A Romanian nun has died after being bound to a cross, gagged and left alone for three days in a cold room in a convent, Romanian police have said. Members of the convent in north-west Romania claim Maricica Irina Cornici was possessed and that the crucifixion had been part of an exorcism ritual.

Cornici was found dead on the cross on Wednesday after fellow nuns called an ambulance, according to police.

On Saturday a priest and four nuns were charged in connection with her death.

Police say the 23-year-old nun, who was denied food and drink throughout her ordeal, had been tied and chained to the cross and a towel pushed into her mouth to smother any sounds.

A post-mortem is to be carried out, although initial reports say that Cornici died from asphyxiation.

She grew up in an orphanage in Arad, in the west of Romania.
Mediafax news agency said Cornici suffered from schizophrenia and the symptoms of her condition caused the priest at the convent and other nuns to believe she was possessed by the devil.

Father Daniel who is accused of orchestrating the crime is said to be unrepentant.

Tanacu, Romania - A Romanian Orthodox priest who ordered the crucifixion of a young nun because she was "possessed by the devil" and now faces murder charges was unrepentant on Saturday as he celebrated a funeral mass for his alleged victim.

"God has performed a miracle for her, finally Irina is delivered from evil," Father Daniel, 29, the superior of the Holy Trinity monastery in north-eastern Romania, said before celebrating a short mass "for the soul of the deceased", in the presence of 13 nuns who showed no visible emotion.

He insisted that from the religious point of view, the crucifixion of Maricica Irina Cornici, 23, was "entirely justified", but admitted that he faced excommunication as well as prosecution, and was seeking a "good lawyer".

What happened to make them think she was possessed?

God was supposed to sort this one out, no matter what this priest believed was in her soul. This is so sad :(

Methinks that orthodox priest needs to be flayed alive for what he did to that woman.

I have heard that she was diagnosed as schitzophrenic, and this is what made them believe that she was possessed. Sad stuff :(

Romanian exorcists arrested for murder (four nuns crucify “possessed” fellow nun) (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1429750/posts)

TANACU - A Romanian priest and four nuns accused of the crucifixion murder of fellow nun because she was "possessed by the devil" were placed in police custody and banished by their religious order.

The court of Vaslui in northeastern Romania issued arrest warrants for priest Daniel Corogeanu, 29, and four nuns, who had been taken into police custody.

The prosecutor, Ovidiu Berinde, told the Vaslui court the four nuns had claimed full responsibility for the death of Maricica Irina Cornici, 23, and said they had acted of their own free will and without the knowledge of Corogeanu.

The five face charges of illegal confinement and murder of Cornici and 25-year prison terms, if found guilty.

Allegedly gagged and chained to a cross, she was found inside the monastery on June 15, after fellow nuns had called an ambulance. She had also allegedly been deprived of food and drink for several days.

Mihaela Straub, spokeswoman for the police in the Vaslui province, said Corogeanu and the nuns had allegedly claimed Cornici was possessed and should be exorcised.

The five were also excluded from their religious order by the Orthodox Church.

"Following the serious events which occurred at the monastery Saint Trinity of Tanacu the priest Daniel Corogeanu has been forbidden to practise, excluded from the monastic order and defrocked," said bishop Corneliu Barladeanu in a statement.

They wanted her savings. That's all. Stupid Eastern European countries.. she had about 3000 € and for Romania that's enough money to murder someone for. pfft.

You should have heard people that knew her - like her German Aupair family - talk about her. She wasn't sick. She was working hard, very friendly and made friends with the region she lived in until she went to Romania. She was not schitzophrenic. They wanted her money.

For the benefit of liberals, this priest is a fundamentalist religious fanatic. You on the Left like to paint us on the Right as demented along the lines of this freak. We have nothing in common with this murderous lunatic.
