In the game nation states, you are asked a few questions every day on "issues" in your country... such as casinos and gay marriage. Your decision forms your country as it moves on.
The decisions are SUPPOSED to have extreme reactions... so if you don't like the idea of that, don't play.
Here's my nation, it's huge (466M people!):

I am leader of the Armed Republic of Underage Hotties (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/41778/page=display_nation). I choose the issues based on the way I think things should be.

I have two nations there: The Holy Republic of Purple Majesty and The Republic of Cybertecha.
I would like more than two issues per day, in order to accelerate the development of the nations. Since you can't "attack" other nations, they only fun for me is in seeing the outcome of my policy decisions.

The Republic of Pendragon_6 is a tiny, economically powerful nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 5 million are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed.
The tiny, corrupt, pro-business government concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Religion & Spirituality and Commerce are on the agenda. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Soda Sales, Retail, and Pizza Delivery industries.
Crime is a serious problem. Pendragon_6's national animal is the bald eagle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the donut.

The Confederacy of Nordic Territory is a tiny, devout nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 6 million are either ruled by a small, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.
The minute, pro-business government, or what there is of one, juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Religion & Spirituality, and Commerce. Income tax is unheard of. A robust private sector is led by the Trout Farming, Book Publishing, and Information Technology industries.
Voting is voluntary and the tenet of free speech is held dear. Crime is a major problem. Nordic Territory's national animal is the sea bass, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the beaver pelt.

this game is great. a shame all the sea bass are being threatened by deforestation though, maybe i can get a hollywood benefit concert going

i love the commentary on issues. and the beaver pelts are becoming more hilarious by the day
But if we were allowed to pay for donations, we'd get more of them and could save more lives. Plus the donor takes home a few hundred beaver pelts in compensation.

a similar kind of game, albeit not free (though there is a demo) is called 'Democracy'
heres the site for it:
www.democracygame.com
It has dilemmas that pop up, a lot like the ones you get in NationStates, but it takes itself a lot more seriously.
