This registry tweak works ONLY with Win2000 that has XDSL or a cable modem.
I've tested this tweak and it doubled my thruput. A link to the tweak is provided below. Please be sure to read ALL the instructions before you proceed.

What about us Win98SE ADSL users? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That page has a link for other operating systems. Just scroll down a bit and you'll see it listed.
Meanwhile, I'll see if I can't find an optimal tweak specifically for Win98SE with ASDL.

I use 98SE with a POTS connection at 28.8K, and that's all it will ever be. As the ads say, "Location location location!" Consider yourself blessed by the Great Computer God if you have anything faster.

The link on that page would be helpful then. Especially one of the MTU tweakers.

I finally got around to installing at patches on my wife's machine (WIN98SE & cable modem) and it really made this old hog fly. She went from 1124kb to >1900 kb!!! Thanks ALS I'll have to install the patches on my machine and the daughters and watch them fly.

Ok...DLd it...how do I install it? Just reboot?? I don't get any "install" option when I right-click the icon in "my download files" after expanding it.

The above file is an .inf file. extract it to your hard drive, and right-click it and then choose "install". A reboot is usually required to cause effect.

The best place I have come across when it comes to a robust set of patches and tweaks for cable modems, DSL and xDSL modems is:
Cable/DSL Speed Patches (http://speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml)
The tweaks cover WIN95, WIN98, W2K and WIN XP. I think you shall find them helpful.
BTW, PPPoE stands for 'point to point protocol over ethernet'. Your standard dialup account is a PPP (point to point protocol), while PPPoE is simply the protocol axiom for high speed connections that connect via network cards.

MTU?? ICS??

These are definitions from Webopedia (http://www.webopedia.com/):
MTU

Short for Maximum Transmission Unit, the largest physical packet size, measured in bytes, that a network can transmit. Any messages larger than the MTU are divided into smaller packets before being sent.
Every network has a different MTU, which is set by the network administrator. On Windows 95, you can also set the MTU of your machine. This defines the maximum size of the packets sent from your computer onto the network. Ideally, you want the MTU to be the same as the smallest MTU of all the networks between your machine and a message's final destination. Otherwise, if your messages are larger than one of the intervening MTUs, they will get broken up (fragmented), which slows down transmission speeds.
Trial and error is the only sure way of finding the optimal MTU, but there are some guidelines that can help. For example, the MTU of many PPP connections is 576, so if you connect to the Internet via PPP, you might want to set your machine's MTU to 576 too. Most Ethernet networks, on the other hand, have an MTU of 1500, which is the default MTU setting for Windows 95.
ICS

Short for Internet Connection Sharing, a method for connecting multiple computers in a LAN to the Internet through a single connection and a single IP address. ICS typically uses NAT technologies to achieve this and works with most connection technologies, including DSL, cable, ISDN, dial-up and satellite. The device with the modem or broadband interface that establishes the connection to the Internet is called the ICS host, or gateway while the other devices that connect to the Internet via the network and the ICS host are called ICS clients. If the ICS host fails, then all of the ICS clients lose their Internet connection.
Sharing an Internet connection can be achieved through either software or hardware solutions. All versions of Windows from Windows 98 and on have ICS software included in the operating system. However, there are also products such as WinGate and WinProxy, which are third-party shareware alternatives that will turn a computer into a gateway or proxy server. Hardware solutions involve a NAT-based hardware router that is connected directly to the Internet connection adapter, and each ICS client is then connected to the router.
On Linux systems, this is called IP masquerading.
