Teachers consider banning 'fail'
From correspondents in London

July 20, 2005 THE word "fail" should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralising pupils, a group of teachers has proposed.

Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.

This is stupid. If you fail, you fail. You can try again, yes, but you still failed. Call it what it is.

Oh my stars, Shadow, you made me laugh so hard there were tears coming out of my eyes. I can just SEE it now, when we start our homeschool year (which starts Aug.1st BTW), and if my son (highly unlikely though, he has an EXCELLENT instructor, :smirky: ) doesn't make grade . . . I'll just tell my in-laws he "deferred success." http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/images/icons/biglaugh.gif

Coming soon to a US school near YOU!

If my daughter ever ever failed a class or a grade, and I told her that she had deferred success (LMAO), she would look at me, roll her eyes and say "Mommy, it's the same thing."

And it is!!!

I guess the next time I get my paycheck I'll just say I deferred richness, instead of saying %*#&!! I'm still broke!

This is ridiculous!!
Why does everyone have to feel good? Sometimes feeling bad and realizing you failed is motivation to do better. We are dumbing down our kids.

Perhaps it has more to do with the teacher's feelings of failure to successfully teach more than it has to do with a child's ability to learn. I've always believed if you set your goals high...you may not reach those goals, but you will probably accomplish more than you would had you not given yourself any agenda.I don't see why a parent would bother to send their children to a school that really doesn't care if your child learns.

Don't tell the kids they failed.

Tell them they flunked!

I do think that it is important to distinguish their attempt from their potential. Tell them that they failed, but don't tell them that they are a failure. Don't tell them that they are stupid. It is important not to overly shelter children, but it is also important not to destroy their sense of self.

If failing is "deferred success" , what are they going to call 'unqualified for employment'?
