Why does Washington State University pay campus hecklers?
Mark Tapscott
July 21, 2005

Washington State University’s web site calls the school “an ideal place to live and learn” and promises prospective students that instead of “smog or traffic jams,” they will find “an easy-going pace and eclectic college-town atmosphere.”

Here’s something else WSU students don’t find much of on the Pullman campus – freedom of speech. Hecklers who shout down speakers at WSU sometimes do so on tax dollars. Hitler used Nazi thugs called “Brown Shirts” to silence opponents as he sought power in pre-war Germany. Today at WSU, the people paying the hecklers are called “administrators.”

Here are the basic facts of this incredible event: Black student playwright Chris Lee staged his intentionally provocative production of “Passion of the Musical” at WSU April 21. He warned potential ticket buyers beforehand the play was likely to offend everybody because, as he later said, “the whole point of the play was to show people that we’re not that different, that we all have issues that can be made fun of.”

Sure enough, a group of Mormon students peacefully protested the production outside the theatre, but inside the First Amendment took a beating as 40 mostly Black protestors repeatedly shouted “I am offended” and threatened audience members and the cast. Guess who paid for the protestors’ tickets?

Something similar happened on our campus a few months ago (University of South Carolina). We had a preacher who came to campus a few times and preached outside the student union. The second time he showed up, a group of students ran to get guitars and hand drums and followed him around, occasionally drowning out his sermon with music.

It was kind of funny at the time, especially because he was intentionally trying to anger everyone in the crowd (calling us all "fornicators", etc.). But it was dangerously close to censorship. The only difference was, those students weren't sanctioned by anyone from the university -- they just spontaneously ran to get their instruments. That these students at WSU had their tickets paid for by a university representative/group, is disturbing.

I find this sickening and outrageous. The tickets costed $200, and it was taken out of my pocket. The invoice is posted on the web here (http://www.thefire.org/pdfs/4fed67ea9d106e3e46d70c79ad153c06.pdf) complete with a signature from administrator Richard Kelley. If I had the money, I would pay someone to follow him around and shout the First Amendment.

With practically every tax in WA state being raised by Gov Gregoire and the democrat legislature, you'd think they'd be a bit more prudent with our hard earned monies.
