RJR, Philip Morris Win Calif. Smoking Suit

Tuesday, December 31, 2002

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. *—*A federal judge in California Tuesday entered a directed verdict in favor of the top two U.S. cigarette makers in a smoking suit, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc. (RJR) said.

The suit, known as Conley, was an individual smoking and health suit heard in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in Oakland.

The verdict in favor of the defendants comes after tobacco industry losses in some high-profile cases in California, including a jury's $28 billion punitive damage award against Philip Morris (MO), which was later cut to $28 million by a judge. Philip Morris is appealing that case, known as Bullock. fox news story (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,74332,00.html)

About time. I hope they get legal fees times three.

I agree.

This judge will be blacklisted by the anti-smoking zealots for sure. They've done it before.

I'm glad they won. No one told that person to put those nasty things to this lips, did they? All these judgements against the tobacco companies are one of the most socialist things we've ever done.

While I agree wholeheartedly with the notion that these lawsuits are idiocy personified, a small mean-spirited part of me takes delight when Phillip Morris gets hit with judgements. You see, my ex-wife is an engineer for them and I'm just petty enough to revel in her agonies. Hey, I never claimed to be a nice guy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue1.gif

Then you're excused. If she loses her job, though, you'd better hope she doesn't demand spousal support, hmmmm????
