To listen to lots of audio topics on homeschooling.
I thought I would pass this on to anyone thinking about homeschooling this coming school year.
Home schooling is sweeping America!
And Home School Heartbeat is there to speak to the needs of home schooling parents.
Produced by Home School Legal Defense Association, Home School Heartbeat is an informative two-minute daily radio program which draws upon HSLDA’s considerable involvement and front line experience in the home schooling movement.
Home School Heartbeat began broadcasting in May of 1991 and is currently airing on over 600 affiliates nationwide. Programs address a wide variety of topics—educational, legal and spiritual—all of which are of interest to any parent, whether they have made the decision to home school or are considering home education for their children.

As the school year is fast approaching everyone is gearing up. Some of you may be considering homeschooling as your school choice. If there is anything I can do to help I am always around to answer any questions that I can. I have a little website that I put shared online unit studies and things of this nature on. Feel free to check it out and I hope it can be of help to others.

I admire those who homeschool their children. I think if done right, it is the best education that can be had. My only concern is the lack of socialization, but this is not a problem if you socialize your children in other ways, as any good homeschooler would.

Many have pulled their kids out of public schools due to the lack of good socialization. After all, only in public school is a child forced to spend day in and day out with a group of kids all the same age as they are. In the real world, this would never be the case.
In the homeschool world, the issue of socialization is actually no longer an issue at all. In fact, it is one the things we get the biggest laugh at when it is brought up.

For those of you who socialize your children in other ways, I can see why. My only concern is regarding those parents who shelter their children to ridiculous extremes, which I know is rare. I have met a few of these kids though who wind up going absolutely hog wild in college (never having been exposed to such an environment before and not knowing how to handle it).

Tumble,
Believe it or not our (mainline homeschoolers) concern is ALSO for those parents who shelter their children to ridiculous extremes. For every Andrea Yates, there are about 10-20 "regular" homeschoolers who suffer a backlash. Believe me, I have just about heard it all. We also have the media (news, journalistic, and even primetime telly) who throw darts at us (Law and Order has done one, and I think actually two anti-homeschool episodes).

I am the coordinator of a HS group. All of our kids are over socialized if anything. :-)
In fact, I wish there were two of me so I could keep up sometimes. I think those "extreme" cases are just far and few between. I have never met any of them. I have been HSing for 7 years now and have been around thousands of HSed kids. They are all pretty much as well rounded as you would want.

I think the liberal media makes us out to be some kind of nuts, but I think it's their ignorance showing more than anything. It's all about the politics that keeps the liberal media at war with HSing. Never forget that.

One reason you may have seen immature HS kids in college could perhaps be due to the fact that so many of them are 15 and 16 when they enter. I personally do not know any kids who have acted "hog wild" when they entered college, but I guess we don't know the same people.

Charity,
That is awesome! Mine (son) is a Junior, but he was accepted into the college dual enrollment program, so I am excited this yeart too! He will start his classes on August 24, so I wanted to get a good headstart on his homeschool classes (he is only enrolled in Applied Welding Technologies and taking one math class at the college). BTW, your son's name and my son's name are VERY similar -- replace the C with BR.
I pray that your son has a successful homeschool year too, and many blessings for all his future endeavors. (Wiping my brow and saying a silent prayer that at least I have one more year to hold on to mine :smirky: ).

I wish we could squish em back little again. What will we do when they are grown and gone? I have folks ask me that all the time. I tell them I will just wait for grandkids and homeschool them :-)
We have been doing the duel enrollment in the past two years too. I think it is going to be a wonderful school year. I am so excited.

I feel the same way -- at least I have a silver lining right now . . . my daughter is only 8th grade, so I still have a ways to go with her :smirky: .

We are very excited about this opportunity (DE). This year HAS to be better than last (one of our roughest, spiritually, physically, emotionally). I'm sure you're going to have a WONDERFUL year! Hey -- are you participating in a graduation ceremony anywhere? Did you get your son a class ring? I'm facing all these things in the coming years too, perhaps you could give me a heads-up, if you don't mind sharing some insight.

I pray this is this best year ever for your family HOMES. :-)
Yes We are getting my son his class ring this year.
I have some resource links here:

We are holding graduation at our church next June. My son will be the first in our HS group to graduate. I have soooo many things to do this year. We are in a larger HS group which holds a graduation each year, but my son wants his to be within our smaller group.
I will be adding a lot more on that link above in the next couple of months. Graduation supplies, ideas, etc...
