Many of you are familiar with the card game hearts. I believe it was Bill Clinton's favorite card game. It's a trick-taking game, like bridge, but the object of the game is to avoid getting the queen of spades (sometimes called the "Black Widow" or "Slippery Bitch"), as well as any heart--unless you get the dreaded queen and all of the hearts, a feat which is called "shooting the moon." Hearts has a number of variations, including one called "jack of diamonds," in which getting the jack of diamonds erases the points for ten hearts.

One variation I've never heard of but which I invented in my mind would go like this: You would play four games of hearts. Each game would end when one of the players had 100 points. The persons with the most points after the four games would be the losers. The winner would be the one with the fewest points. But here's the twist: After the first game, points earned in each subsequent game would be given to one of the other players. In the second game, the points a player earned would be given to the poor sap on his left. In the third game, the players on opposite sides of the table would trade points with each other. In the fourth and final game, points earned would go to the opponent on the right.

If you think about it, the game would be perfect for liberal Democrats. I would call it "bleeding hearts." What do you think?
