Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani could win the New York State governor's race next year against Attorney General Eliot Spitzer if he chooses to enter the race, according to the latest Quinnipiac University survey.
Spitzer trails Giuliani by 7 percentage points in a hypothetical match-up, the New York Post reports - a marked improvement from April, when Giuliani was 25 points ahead.
All other state Republicans trail the Democrat lawman.
According to Quinnipiac:
• Spitzer would defeat New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg 51 - 34 percent, with a 50 - 38 percent lead among New York City voters
• Spitzer would trounce former Independence Party candidate Thomas Golisano 58 - 22 percent
• Spitzer bests former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld by an ever larger margin, 60 - 16 percent
• Even rising GOP star Jeanine Pirro is no match for the pitbull prosecutor, losing a hypothetical race 59 - 21 percent.
Giuliani's lead offers little comfort to state Republicans, since he's believed to have his sights set on a 2008 presidential bid
