<AT:CLASS></AT:CLASS>The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.

<AT:CLASS></AT:CLASS>Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed on team uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.

You know? Once again colleges are getting more "politically incorrect." They never cease to amaze me. Before long, the University of Connecticut won't be allowed to use it's Husky mascot due to cruelty to animals.

Don't call teams Spartans or Trojans; that will offend the Greeks.

Don't call teams Gaels, Celtics or Irish; that will offend the Irish. Don't call teams Scots or Highlanders; that will offend the rest of Gaelic ethnic groups.

Don't call teams Saxons; that will offend the English (Anglo-Saxons).

Don't call teams Vikings; that will offend the Scandinavians.

Don't call teams Saints, Cardinals, Crusaders or Padres; that will offend the Christians.

Don't call teams Cowboys; that will offend ranch hands.

The San Francisco Football Team.

The New York Football Team.

The other New York Football Team.

The Pittsburgh Football Team.

Letter to Editor: "How come these guys don't have some more imaginative names?"

Lets not forget the animal kingdoms' right not to be offended.

The Detroit Tigers name will be changed to the Detroit Baseball Club.

They could use names like those found in European soccer clubs. I believe that some teams have nicknames, but they aren't commonly used, like they are here. There's a team in England called Wolverhampton Wanderers (http://www.wolves.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Home/0,,10307,00.html), but Wanderers is part of their official name. Their nickname is Wolves. The Heart of Midlothian Football Club (http://www.heartsfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/HistoryDetail/0,,10289,00.html) is commonly called simply Hearts.

As a faithful Florida State Seminole Fan I am absolutely OUTRAGED at this ridiculous ruling. Our team does NOT disparage native Americans, but instead pays homage to the undefeated pride, character and spirit of the Seminole Indians of Florida. I have heard that FSU is contemplating legal action, and I for one support it! This is just the most STUPID thing I have ever heard of.

GO 'NOLES! Forever let our war spear fly!

Of course nobody bothers to ask the Indian nations, do they? Most of them (My husband is 1/4 Eastern Cherokee) are okay with the idea of their names being symbolic of bravery and the fighting spirit. Obviously, nobody likes slurs.

Hey. How about the New Jersey Jihadists? Or the Florida Fatwah's? Maybe the pointy-headed intellectuals will approve of those.

We had a case here in North Carolina a couple of years ago, where UNC Pembroke (I think it was) had an Indian mascot name, and then some peeon from the Anti-Christian Lawyers' Union decided to get in on it. Most of the students at UNCP are from the Lumbee Nation. The Lumbee chief told this rocket scientist, "If anybody should be allowed to use an Indian name, don't you think it should be us?"

Mind you, I can't wait for both Florida State University and the University of Utah to hit the NCAA with multimillion-dollar lawsuits. Watch the NCAA back down in short order when that happens. :smash:

Now here's a different but idea on the same level.

The Army needs to change it's helicopter designators. Can't offend the Native Americans now can we.

-AH-64 Apache
-OH-58D Kiowa
-UH-60 Blackhawk
-UH-1 Iroquois
-Chinook Helicopter

And from years past:

-Cayuse
-CH-54 Tarhe
-Cochise (the famed "flying banana")

*all this done with much sarcasm.
