We differ in our thinking here. We have always believed hands are for hugs and love, not hurts. Our family had a "board of education" (which actually was a paddle from a paddle-ball game). Swats were on the tush, and limited to three, at most (for the worse offense).

Any OTHER objects, not acceptable (although, I must confess I have used a wooden ruler after the paddle broke swatting a jean covered bum, :smirky: ).

Our children are older now, so punishments have graduated to more "creative" measures (restrictions, chores, scripture writing and school reports).

I had no idea you people got so mad over semantics. I prefer to use the word beat because my wife considers the word 'spank' sexual in nature. Anyways, I think if I need to put my kids in line and the only way to do is to teach them a little lesson through corporal punishment, then I think that I should do it. My so I don't need to with him because he gets straight As, and as long as he does well in school and keeps his head on straight...I'm cool with that. My daughters are a different story though, with them I need to hammer in lessons of life. They think that they can go on free-loving and missing out on important things like Chuch and School, so with them I need to be harder. I am only doing this because I love my kids, and I want the best for them.

I have never had a reason at all to paddle my child, so far anyway (11 years). From what it seems on here (and other happenings), other kids were either waaaaay worse than my little affectionate girl or I should be harsher on her for some things. But seriously, there is a point that I would paddle her probably, she just has never gotten there yet. Wonder if that means I am a wimp or I have a supremely well behaved child.

I am probably a wimp. But, so is she. And she has done nothing warrenting a paddling so far.

I agree Princess. We never called it spanking around our house anyway, we referred to it as paddling. There are two offenses which AUTOMATICALLY received paddling as a punishment -- injury to another (sibling, friend, etc.), and blatant lying. To tell the truth about a situation ALWAYS resulted in a repreive from a paddling, but there were STILL consequences for the bad behavior. Punishment should always fit the offense, never done in anger, and administered as quickly after the "incident" as possible.

Well hell is always the option for people who do not want to wait, oh hell it's the ONLY option. If one of my kids ever had pre-maritial sex I would beat the living hell out of them. Personally, I say that no one is above a beating. Sometimes people need one, I feel that some of the these trashy whores that I am bombarded by at the mall maybe need a good beating or two. I hit my kids becase they need something to keep them inline. I always try to make sure that they get punished when they do wrong, I send my girls to an all-girls school where paddlings occur daily, and if they are in trouble at school then they are in trouble at home. Personally I believe spare the rod save the child.
