How do you do it?

At the top of the edit box there is this symbol http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/images/white/editor/createlink.gif which creates the link to the web. Type in the text you want, copy the url, hilight the text you want to link, click the symbol paste into the box and hit enter. It takes longer to explain it than to do it.

Try a few links in this forum, that why I set it up.

Cool. So you mean this link? (http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/ubbcode.html). Awesome.

Does anybody like tennis? (http://www.usta.com/home/default.sps)

I'm trying it both ways. First, I did it tac's way. Then I tried it MSGT's way. I think they both work.

Now I'm gonna try some bullets from MSGT's link.

Bullet one is fired!!
And bullet two is fired!!

Now bullet items.

Bullet item number 1.
And here's bullet item number two.

Did it work?

YAY!! It did!!

I don't even know where this alleged edit box is to try. I am looking, I have clicked and looked. I am too stupid for this it appears but I try to learn by reading these techie forums, and this one has me confused as can be.

The graphic below shows the symbol that Tac referred to, pointed out by the red arrow.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/DocDoom777/FC1.png" />

Clicking that button brings up this dialog box.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/DocDoom777/FC2.png" />

Enter the hyperlink text that you want there, e,g., Here's the link.

Click OK and this box opens.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/DocDoom777/FC3.png" />

The URL goes in there. When you click OK, the code will be created.

You can also enter it by hand using this format:

[ url=(enter URL here)]Enter hyperlink text here[ /url]

For example:

[ url=http://www.freeconservatives.com/]FreeConservatives[ /url]

Removing the the spaces after the two [ results in this:

FreeConservatives (http://www.freeconservatives.com/)

Graphics can also be used as hyperlinks:

[ url=http://www.freeconservatives.com/][ img]http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/images/smilies/suv.gif[ /img][ /url]

Removing all the spaces gives this (hover the mouse pointer over the graphic to see the effect).

I am probably doing this wrong. I click on that little button thingie and it says something about enter the url of the hyperlink you want entered. It doesn't say anything about javascript or even mention freeconservatives.com. So yeah, I am doing it wrong.lol.

I am assuming that you already know how to get and post a link, so I'll begin this little demo from where the confusion seems to be.

Step 1. (This is the most important if you want your link to turn out the way you want.)

Before you put a link in your message, make sure that the text you want to use is in your message before you begin. For instance, I want these words to show up as a link:

Hey dude, click here

Step 2. From this point, I do what I normally do to insert a link, except that BEFORE I click on the link icon on top of the message window, I take my mouse and highlight the Hey dude, click here text.

Then just follow the normal steps for adding a link.

The Hey dude, click here text will turn into this:

Hey dude, click here (http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=686219&WxsIERv=Obrvat%20747-406&WdsYXMg=XYZ%20-%20Eblny%20Qhgpu%20Nveyvarf&QtODMg=Cuvyvcfohet%20%2F%20Fg.%20Znnegra%20-%20Cevaprff%20Whyvnan%20%28FKZ%20%2F%20GAPZ%29&ERDLTkt=Argureynaqf%20Nagvyyrf&ktODMp=Frcgrzore%202004&BP=0&WNEb25u=Rhebcvk&xsIERvdWdsY=CU-OSN&MgTUQtODMgKE=Ubj%20ybj%20pna%20lbh%20trg%21%20Fvzc yl%20nznmvat%20naq%20oerngugnxvat%20gb%20jngpu.%20 Vg%27f%20nyy%20bire%20va%20n%20frpbaq%20ohg%20gur% 20cubgbtencu%20naq%20zrzbel%27f%20jvyy%20ynfg%20sb e%20rire.%20FKZ%20vf%20fvzcyl%20gur%20zbfg%20nznmv at%20cynpr%20V%20unir%20ivfvgrq%2C%20V%20jbhyq%20e rpbzzraq%20vg%20gb%20nyy.%20Fcrpvny%20gunaxf%20gb% 20Qrerx%20C%20sbe%20uvf%20uryc%20%5BPnaba%20RBF%20 20Q%5D&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=165759&NEb25uZWxs=2004-10-08%2000%3A00%3A00&ODJ9dvCE=&O89Dcjdg=23999%2F725&static=yes&width=1024&height=693&sok=%20&photo_nr=11&prev_id=671015&next_id=702634)

So, you really don't have to type any extra text.

It can be a bit confusing. I remember the old way to do it--you could type in the text as you created the link or just leave it as is.

Don't have to do that anymore. Just make sure that whatever text you want to use in your link has been typed before creating your new link.:thumb:

Well, I thought it might be browser-related -- I use Opera -- so I fired up IE and tried the button. I got the same hyperlink text followed by the URL, only with "Explorer User Prompt" rather than Javascript.

As a final check, I launched Firefox and got the same two-step sequence.

Ergo, I have no explanation why Melz' efforts go directly to the URL dialog box.

Hey doc, while we are talking about technical problems, is there a way you could give me that link IRfanview again? My oldest brother recently swiped the computer clean, and irfanview was lost in the process.

Woohoo It worked MSGT ! I didn't get the highlighting part first thing I guess. See, I am slow. But I never got the boxes that Doc posted. But now I will know how to do that when I think it is going to fit better in a post so thank you!

The link is just google and was a test but you cannot test it by previewing link so I had to put it there.

Thank you for your efforts too Doc and I am sorry I am so technically non-inclined, but I do rely on your help so often so thank you for putting up with me also :)

MSGT, I promise to stop bugging you guys on these techie issues, once you teach me everything you know! LOL. I seriously don't know why Doc's boxes didn't work. I will look for said boxes in the future and maybe someday my emachine will catch up. But your steps worked and that's what I needed to at least understand the purpose of this thread!

thanks again dear :)
