SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The state Assembly leader called on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to make California the third state to declare an emergency along its border with Mexico.
New Mexico drew national attention last week when its governor declared a state of emergency, citing lawlessness, drug smuggling and human trafficking along the border. The governor of Arizona did the same this week.
Democratic Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez said Thursday that California needs to pressure the federal government to stop drug running and illegal immigration.
"The timing is good," he said. "The governors of Arizona and New Mexico have done this, and there's an opportunity for three states to have a joint effort in lobbying the federal government."
Schwarzenegger has said he supports the actions of his fellow governors but does not think there is a crisis along California's border.
Schwarzenegger supports the construction of a fence along California's border with Mexico and recently praised the Minuteman Project, which has conducted civilian patrols of the border.

Funny how all these Dems (especially Mexican Dems) are suddenly clamoring for a resolution to the illegal immigrant problem.
Can anyone say: Concerted effort to drive 2006/2008 campaign issues?

Funny how all these Dems (especially Mexican Dems) are suddenly clamoring for a resolution to the illegal immigrant problem.
Ha Ha Ha. Yeah, that is indeed funny. And I think this is the real reason (taken from another forum):
Border Emergency or Border Opportunity?
Two Democratic southwest governors have cleverly declared a "border emergency" for the sole purpose of acquiring 500 million dollars (for starters) in federal taxpayer funds.
This money will not be used help stop illegal immigrants from entering their states. Instead, it will be used to finance more schools, emergency room facilities, welfare and subsidized housing to accommodate existing illegals which serve to disguise the overall situation by creating the illusion that the illegal immigrant problem is far less alarming, pressing and urgent than previously believed.
Once during a political speech, one of the governors proudly and defiantly announced to the world's Hispanics, that his state is their new home. He has turned his state into a staging area and comfortable sanctuary for his fellow Hispanics to come to America.
By using federal monies to surreptitiously absorb and "assimilate" illegal immigrants into their states, it will make illegals far less visible, reduce resistance, soothe tempers and consequently make it much more agreeable, easier and smoother for these governors to welcome thousands of additional "refugees" and future Democrats.
Unlike governor Arnold, who would use the additonal federal funds to build a protective fence, these Democratic governors are planning to use the money to disguise the problem and lay the groundwork necessary to facilitate and smoothe the entry of even more illegal immigrants.

Ohhhh, I see now. Money talks, bullsh*t walks.
That is insane, if true. And if these states will get money for a "border emergency" then why doesn't the Federal government just use that money and declare emergency funding for ALL of our borders. That way, they could use it for the cause most of America wants it used for and keep it from being misused by states who can just "claim" anything. Is the Federal government paying NO attention to this issue?? AAARRRRGGGGHHH !!!!!!!!!!

As I said before, they want this issue to go away.
They will act like they want to take care of the problem, but as soon as we all give a sigh of relief, the floodgates will open, and all will be as before.

Richardson: Border Fence is Anti-Immigrant Gov. Bill Richardson, who won plaudits this week from foes of illegal immigration after he declared a state of emergency along New Mexico's southern border, said Sunday that plans to construct a border fence are anti-immigrant.
"A fence at the border is not going to work because, first of all, they're easily porous, and that sends a message that America is a nation that is not valuing immigrants," Richardson told ABC's "This Week."
The New Mexico Democrat said he favors beefing up the Border Patrol instead, explaining: "You [add] border agents - 10,000 of them. Couple them with new technologies, like some of these [unmanned] vehicles and lasers and detection equipment."
Republicans, on the other hand, have praised the border fence provisions included in the Real ID Act of 2005, which funds the completion of a multi-layered fence along the California-Mexico border.
"One of the things the Real ID Act does is to build a double fence where there will be a path that the Border Patrol can run cars and SUVs on, between 40 and 50 miles an hour, to catch illegal aliens who jump over the first fence before they get to the second fence," Rep. James Sensenbrenner explained in March.
"West of [San Diego], that kind of a fence has worked, and it stopped the 10 murders a year that have occurred on the old segment of the border, and 300 drug runs in trucks per month have been stopped by that fence." "We need to complete the fence," he urged.
SO, Richardson declares a state of emergency, and then says that the fence should not go into place?
You can't have it both ways there governor.
This is ALLa putup job by these Dem governors, they promise that they are going to do something, and then the one thing that will actually work, OF COURSE they don't want to do it.
Bunch of lying cheating, selfserving bastards!!!

I'm telling you, it's all just a build up in rhetoric from the Dems in anticipation of 2006 and 2008.

No, Gov. Richardson, we are NOT an anti-immigrant country, we just want one standard for all who come here. ALL should apply for visas and do necessary requirements for citizenship, not just those coming from Europe, Asia, Australia or wherever.
It is obvious that these "illegals" have no intention of being legal. Building the fence makes a statement, a statement that says "do it right, not illegally." But since your former boss was BJ Clinton, what would you know about doing things right?
